Sen. John McCain offered an explanation Friday for why he joined Democrats and two of his Republican colleagues in voting against the “skinny” repeal of Obamacare, saying he did not believe it would “actually reform our health care system.”
"While the amendment would have repealed some of Obamacare’s most burdensome regulations, it offered no replacement to actually reform our health care system and deliver affordable, quality health care to our citizens,” McCain said in a statement.
"The Speaker's statement that the House would be ‘willing’ to go to conference does not ease my concern that this shell of a bill could be taken up and passed at any time," he added.
McCain, who came back to Washington this week after surgery related to his brain cancer diagnosis, cast the deciding vote against the legislation. He joined Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski in opposing the bill.
Ahead of the vote he did not reveal his intentions, only telling reporters to “wait for the show.”
The Arizona senator said he opposed one of the “major failures” of Obamacare, which was that it was “rammed through Congress by Democrats on a strict-party line basis without a single Republican vote.”
He did not feel it was right for Republicans to do the same.
“We should not make the mistakes of the past that has led to Obamacare’s collapse, including in my home state of Arizona where premiums are skyrocketing and health care providers are fleeing the marketplace,” McCain said.
“We must now return to the correct way of legislating and send the bill back to committee, hold hearings, receive input from both sides of aisle, heed the recommendations of nation’s governors, and produce a bill that finally delivers affordable health care for the American people.”
The rationale doesn’t even make sense. It was wrong to pass Obamacare on a party-line basis, but it would be wrong to use a party-line vote to undo the wrong and set the stage back to what it was before the original wrong was done?
He’s saying that he CHOSE to let the thuggery stand. Refuses to fight fire with fire - even if he believes the whole world will be consumed by the fire he lets rage. This is moral crap, couched in excuses.
” . it offered no replacement to actually reform our health care system ...”
It’s not the Job or Purpose of the Government , OR the Working people in this Country to provide Health Care for
Those that choose NOT TO WORK!
McCain is and 8-ball screw-up from the word go. McCain absolutely loathes the working American Middle Class people.
McCain is all about McCain. It shows!
If only the Viet Cong would’ve put McCain out of his misery rather than hold him captive, only to inflict his Deep State pain on millions of Americans.
Because he is a liar.
Wanna buy a bridge?
13 seconds apart!
McCain said he would vote for skinny repeal IF he were confident the House would ONLY pass it. He said he voted against it because, in conference, the House bill or something like it could re-emerge.
WHAT HE DIDN’T SAY is that right now he can prevent the skinny bill from even going to conference. BUT, were the House bill or something like it to come out of conference, he couldn’t be sure he could cast the deciding vote against it.
In other words, he said he killed what he views as partisan health care reform while he was still able to.
McCain is history and not the point. Obamacare remains on the Democrats. This stupid “Skinny Repeal” would have let them off the hook and able to blame Republicans for whatever happens (e.g. collapse, high premiums, etc).
McCain is an SOB but by helping the Senate fail he has given Trump the green light to do whatever he can for the American people, including EOs and including beating the hell out of every Senator who failed and supporting their primary opponents.
This wasn’t a vote on a clean repeal, they already punted that one days ago. This may just be the outcome Trump was hoping for all along.
We must now return to the correct way of legislating...”
He gets brain cancer then votes with the democrats.
If McCain was from Pennsylvania, I would vote against him because he does not vote Republican or even speak like one. He seems to have a thing against Trump. He is definitely a Rino!
McCain is BULL$HITTIN’ the American public.
Stunted Presidential ambitions have driven many over the edge, it seems. Twice failed Hillary Clinton, for instance, demonstrably batty. Then there’s the pitiful blimp circling the world in search of lost relevancy and prestige known as Al Gore.
McCain does seem to be the king of pissy, personal vindictive grudges aired in public via the legislative process just because he can, though.
Liar. He just wanted to stick it to Trump and conservative Americans.
Drain Bamage.
Bullshit! He did it to hurt President Trump.
He isn’t fooling anyone anymore than his girlfriend’s linda, susan collins, and lisa m. I tend to use lower case letters in the names of people I despise. The dishonorable mcturd stinks like his namesake.
McCain has always leaned Democrat. He promised to get rid of Obamacare his last go around. I am sorry he is dying with Cancer but I think he is getting even with Republicans from his Presidential run. McCain can used Medicare and a supplement but other Republicans that voted against repeal do not have to use Obamacare and that his why they could care less. I would love to replace all of these crooks.

Oh he’ll finally be gone. I hope he lives to see himself rendered useless after the 2018 elections.
ESAD McCain. You have betrayed the American people and your fellow military officers long enough!
