Are Atheists Generally Smarter Than Religious People?

by Dr Jerry Bergman

In a recent article at Live Science, Laura Geggel asks, “Why Are Atheists Generally Smarter Than Religious People?” She claims that “For more than a millennium, scholars have noticed a curious correlation: Atheists tend to be more intelligent than religious people.”[i] How they could know this, since IQ tests and other means of measuring intelligence were only developed at the start of the last century, was not answered. Another problem is many kinds of intelligence exist, such as doing well on paper and pencil tests, or on performance tests, for example. Also, there exist intelligence in other areas, such as music IQ, math IQ, abstract conceptualization IQ, verbal IQ, personality IQ, even emotional IQ,[ii] and, according to some authors, 120 different kinds of IQs.

Then again it was tested when I was in the Marine Corps for some reason.
I was at Parris Island in '66 and we took the GCT test. I think they still do the test, but it's not the same as 50 years ago.
Interestingly, I scored 126 and the guy I joined the Corps with scored 125.

This happened when I was in for a couple of years already, not at Parris Island.

I just got a message from battalion HQ one day to report to an office somewhere along with several other guys from different units and we took the test, completely unprepared or anything, just working one hour, taking a test the next......................

Athiests are more outwardly intellectual.

A Unitarian commandment: you must believe in at most one God.

Smart and wise are two different things.

They unite on the rarest occasions.

It doesn’t take an intelligent person to understand the futility of proving a negative.

A smaller subset than the general population. Much smaller.

My experience with atheists is that they are not well versed in science but repeat the phrases of their better versed leaders. In many cases, they have no idea of what they are talking about or the downstream effects of their scientific statements. I do.

Smart kids get a lot of reinforcement by family and teachers that may become arrogance as they mature.

Ultimately, it may be simply that they have not been called to Jesus. I prayerfully hope they are called in the future.

It is positively heart breaking. I remember how I used to feel. It was terrible.

Anyone who believes that life somehow spontaneously emerged from the so-called "primordial soup" without some kind of Divine intervention is as dumb as a bowl of primordial soup.

Then there's the whole "Big Bang". Let me get this straight...all the particles of gas and crap out there, swirling around in the universe were compressed and compressed until the pressure made them...explode? Hmmmm. So why don't diamonds explode? After all, they're carbon that's been compressed and compressed, yet they become diamonds, not IEDs.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

I was atheist for about six months.
But I was 16 and I got better.

Atheism is a religion of non-religion. They have their prophets, their dogma and their standards that they use to judge nonbelievers.

I like the way South Park’s Trey Parker put it....
“Out of all the ridiculous religion stories — which are greatly, wonderfully ridiculous — the silliest one I’ve ever heard is, ‘Yeah, there’s this big, giant universe and it’s expanding and it’s all going to collapse on itself and we’re all just here, just ‘cuz. Just ‘cuz. That to me, is the most ridiculous explanation ever.”

Actually, one of the things I have noticed is a large number of younger people adopting atheism simply because it is trendy in their general contact group. A lot of them

A bad reason, the lack of thought is a bit of a put off.

I also suspect that if people claim that they are atheist others will assume that they have a high IQ.

Actually, it’s not intelligence that matters, its wisdom - two different things entirely.

It’s like the difference between strength and skill - what’s better in a fight, to be the strongest man in the world or to be someone like Bruce Lee who knows how to effectively use the strength that he has.

Well...in their own minds yes, but we know what the Lord says about that. Romans 1:22 'Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools'.

Psychopaths are I’m sure more intelligent than religious people on average. Raw intelligence doesn’t mean you get a correct conclusion. Often it means your conclusion is double wrong and you’re twice as sure if it. Also ... God is not found in the conceptual realm. Outside the realm of concepts, IQ can’t help you, but certainly evil can use it to trap you.
