Trump's DOJ gears up for crackdown on marijuana

The Trump administration is readying for a crackdown on marijuana users under Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

President Trump’s Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety, led by Sessions, is expected to release a report next week that criminal justice reform advocates fear will link marijuana to violent crime and recommend tougher sentences for those caught growing, selling and smoking the plant.

Sessions sent a memo in April updating the U.S. Attorney’s Offices and Department of Justice Department (DOJ) component heads on the work of the task force, which he said would be accomplished through various subcommittees. In the memo, Sessions said he has asked for initial recommendations no later than July 27.

“Task Force subcommittees will also undertake a review of existing policies in the areas of charging, sentencing, and marijuana to ensure consistency with the Department's overall strategy on reducing violent crime and with Administration goals and priorities,” he wrote.

Criminal justice reform advocates fear Sessions’s memo signals stricter enforcement is ahead.

“The task force revolves around reducing violent crime and Sessions and other DOJ officials have been out there over the last month and explicitly the last couple of weeks talking about how immigration and marijuana increases violent crime,” said Inimai Chettiar, director of the Brennan Center's Justice Program.

Yeah, and he’s going after Marijuana and is all in for asset forfeitures. Fire his ass and recess appoint his successor. Sessions is an unmitigated disgrace as AG. I am sure the only reason he’s still in his chair is because of the Senate approval “process.”

Maybe Hillary has some pot growing in her backyard and now Sessions will go after her!

It's Russian weed. She's untouchable.

“Now we know where Sessions priorities are.”

You mean, enforcing long-standing Federal law? My, God. The horror.

The pro-pot movement is a lazy movement that somehow thought that decades of Federal legal precedent didn’t matter. It has been amazingly delusional to watch.

Remember: The Fed loves money and power more than it loves you, or your “freedom.” The only way to fight it is to change the law - FIRST.

This crap and the recusal makes me call into question what the hell Sessions was doing all along. Was he sent to the Trump campaign to keep an eye on it, or was he really a believer? He has done none of the things that I expected him to do, based on his background and qualifications. He is smart enough to know what the deep state is up to, and to know what needs to be done to confront it. But he’s not doing what needs to be done. So, why?

Agree 100%... either legalize a plant God put on this earth for our use or be consistant, go back to prohibition and make alcohol illegal again... either works for me.

isn’t it a fact that marijuana is illegal under federal law? I know a number of states have legalized marijuana, but what exactly is the process, if federal and state laws contradict each other?

Is this an area of “prosecutorial discretion” or whatever the legal term is, to sort of look the other way if a federal law is being violated somewhere?

Maybe it’s time for some court cases? Can states openly legalize marijuana in violation of federal law? What about the issues of federal/state responsibilities, the 10th amendment concept, etc?? There’s a lot legally to chew on. It would be good to get this out in the open.

I hear he can fire Mueller.

Who can fire Mueller? Some have said that only Rosenstein can. I'm not sure. Maybe Sessions could if he unrecused himself.

The point is there are many Federal laws being broken or ignored by elected and non elected State and Federal officials. To have reform there has to be priorities to stop corruption. The Left is trying to finish off Trump with an on going coup and Sessions is more concerned about dope. Baloney!

Then call your Congress critters and tell them you need the 'law' changed...

There are other ways available. Congress isn't the only way to change things.

But go ahead, keep on pushing that BS.

With ALL the things that DOJ could go after this is NOT one on the radar for most Americans who voted for Trump.

Sessions is starting to look like "Puff the Magic Dragon."

The problem with replacing Sessions now is that unless it was a Loretta Lynch type, the Rats and RINO’s would probably stop confirmation.

Have you ever seen ‘Reefer Madness”? It’s the same ‘Look a Squirrel!’ bullshit that started the drug war in the 30’s. He’s stuck in a loop and the only weapon he has is a hammer.

Is he? I have wondered. When he spoke at an event husband and I attended in December, he was slurring his words. Husband and I both thought he sounded inebriated. But that was the only time I’ve heard him sound that way. I don’t go looking for video of him speaking.
