WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. investigators examining money laundering accusations against President Donald Trumps former campaign manager Paul Manafort hope to push him to cooperate with their probe into possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia, two sources with direct knowledge of the investigation said.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team is examining Manafort's financial and real estate records in New York as well as his involvement in Ukrainian politics, the officials said.
Between 2006 and 2013, Manafort bought three New York properties, including one in Trump Tower in Manhattan. He paid for them in full and later took out mortgages against them. A former senior U.S. law enforcement official said that tactic is often used as a means to hide the origin of funds gained illegally. Reuters has no independent evidence that Manafort did this.
The sources also did not say whether Mueller has uncovered any evidence to charge Manafort with money laundering, but they said doing so is seen by investigators as critical in getting his full cooperation in their investigation.
"If Mueller's team can threaten criminal charges against Manafort, they could use that as leverage to convince him to cooperate," said one of the sources.

“The statement given to Robert Mueller was anything but specific. It simply stated that Mueller was to investigate any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump and any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation.
With such a sweeping mandate...”
Turkey. Flynn. Turkey is not Russia
Yep, it renders Mueller useless.
And yet another special prosecutor should be appointed to expose Mueller and his band of big RAT-donor "investigators". After all, they are RATs...guaranteed to be dirty, they will not be able to stand up to scrutiny.
You have me confused with somebody else.
Yes, DJT does offense, not defense, so full steam ahead!
Oh no..I have it right...just look at your posts on this thread...
Including calling me a kook for saying manafort and his shady dealings with son in law would get roped into this investigation.along with his many other business dealings.
..meanwhile..news out today that NY handed over their manafort money laundering investigation to mueller.
.this isnt a case of a Watergate break in..this is a complex issue involving foreign countries and money
Yes. I encourage people to read what I wrote, and to reject your interpretation of what I wrote.
As I pointed out, you will argue that whatever Mueller takes on, he is justified in taking on. The proof being that he took it on.
I'm not going to bother asking you want you position is. You lie like a rug.
Again..that is not what I said.
Meanwhile...you claim he is outside his scope. Turley indicated Mueller has a sweeping broad mandate.
And that is what I said..shady business dealing are fair game given that manafort and trump have been closely associated with known russian money launders
As I said in post 120 ...
Your argument boils down to "If Mueller takes on a case, it is in his jurisdiction." You intend to prove your argument is the correct one by pointing to Mueller having taken the case.
That isnt my argument.
Lets be clear. You think he is already outside the scope
I think if he finds a trail he can follow it
I did not say it is a case of “ I am Robert Mueller so I can do anything I want”
I don't know what he is or is not pursuing, with any precision.
Our differences as to what Mueller's scope properly is, are previously expressed. You have not introduced any specific investigation to our argument, even as a hypothetical, but so far, you are true to the form I outlined. Whatever it is that Mueller is investigating, you see as within his scope.
You point to any news or speculation of what Mueller is investigating as validation of your point. No argument needed from your end. You assert he can follow any trail. Whatever he is doing is following a trail, and because he is following a trail, it is in the scope of his assignment.
Post to me when you find him out of bounds. Reminding me that you believe he is inbounds is a waste of your energy.
I cant post that to you because i am not privy to the trail. You on the other hand claimed on this thread he is already out of bounds
Is he out of bounds with Turkey? It isnt russia
No, I did not. My remarks as to what Mueller is in fact investigating are at most conditional. post 46 ...
Mueller is WAY OUT OF LINE if [<- That is the conditional] he is looking for crimes not associated with the Trump campaign, which didn't even exist before 2015.
At post 78, I describe my view of the scope, without reference to what Mueller might be investigating.
At post 84, I argued that a Manafort money laundering case is outside Mueller's jurisdiction. I did not argue that Mueller was or was not investigating that case, only that it was not properly Mueller's.
At post 120, I expressly said that "Neither of us needs to know for a fact what Mueller is investigating."
The rest of our back and forth turns on the question I put to you at post 109 ...
So how exactly is "Mueller's authorization includes events not related to the Trump campaign" a misstatment of your position?
One more time
A trail that leads to needing to investigate ties to russian mobsters .money laundering criminals...and real estate transactions can ABSOLUTELY be part of the scope.
You are claiming it cannot. Is that right?

So can human trafficking, drug trafficking, murder and kidnapping, if it's directly tied to the campaign. But if the investigation into criminal activity is not tied to the Trump campaign, it is still in Sessions' portfolio. Rosenstein would be out of bounds giving part of Sessions' portfolio to Mueller.
