Far-right millennials: what drives young women to extreme politics?
Right-wing nationalists are on the march in Europe and the US. But if you're picturing men with shaved heads, think again. Polly Dunbar meets the young, far-right British women drawn to the extreme edge of politics
Im on the Strand in London, watching 300 men and women wave St Georges Cross flags and chant terrorist scum off our streets. Theyre members of Britain First, a far-right political party founded from the ashes of the BNP. Along with the English Defence League (EDL), the party is using the Westminster attack a few days earlier as an opportunity to march against terror. Witnessing the presence of a group who want a ban on Islam in the UK is shocking. Even more so is the sight of young far-right women in their ranks and, at the helm, Britain Firsts deputy leader, 31-year-old Jayda Fransen. This woman describes Islam as a cancer of the world and has proclaimed there is no such thing as a moderate Muslim.
Stepping outside my liberal London bubble, in which my views pro-Europe, inclusive are echoed by my friends and colleagues, I want to understand why increasing numbers of millennial women are attracted to far-right politics.
Many nationalist parties are experiencing a resurgence across Europe. In the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark and Sweden, far-right parties have thrived; while in France, Marine Le Pen, leader of the anti-immigration Front National soared in popularity to become a strong contender in Mays presidential election. She may not have won, but still, 10.6 million people voted for her.

Why are the parties never far-left?
Dear Mary Clare:
The answer to your question is you and all those like you.
One word: survival.
Perhaps being blown up, run over with trucks, shot, stabbed, raped, robbed etc. had something to do with it. Just a thought.
... is probably impossible for me, but I can temporarily fake it and lie about it, so that's what I'll do.
Look up “clueless” and there’s a picture of Marie Claire.
Shortly after the election I saw an anti-Trump protest at a busy intersection. 30-40 people, all of them (pretty) young women from the nearby university. I think there might have been one guy, but he was obviously gay as hell.
Those poor deluded creatures love their country, Marie. You’ll never understand them. But I do.
There really IS no such thing as a “moderate” Muslim! The President of Turkey, who IIRC is also a Muslim scholar, finds the concept offensive!!!
And far-left parties are never described as extremist, either!
The left is constantly pushing the left edge further and further ad sinistra so Extreme Left today is mainstream tomorrow and all but the most rabid, of whom no one speaks, are way beyond the left wing crazies who stay in the public space. Anyone who does not slide leftward is now or will be tomorrow officially Extreme Right because the right edge follows the left edge in the press and the movies and the schools.
Inquiring minds want to know.
Politics is about ruling over others. Therefore, “extreme” politics can only involve extreme policies of ruling over others. That’s why only left wingers can be political “extremists.”
Safety and security. That and not wanting to get smacked upside the head by a bicycle lock wielding professor.
They want the English people to have a country?
They don’t want to be property of Muslim men?
In Europe, they don’t circumcise baby boys any more. They apparently just castrate them.
UK politics bump for later....
And did you ever notice that there’s never “right”? It’s always “far right.”
