WASHINGTON — President Trump’s lawyers and aides are scouring the professional and political backgrounds of investigators hired by the special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, looking for conflicts of interest they could use to discredit the investigation — or even build a case to fire Mr. Mueller or get some members of his team recused, according to three people with knowledge of the research effort.
The search for potential conflicts is wide-ranging. It includes scrutinizing donations to Democratic candidates, investigators’ past clients and Mr. Mueller’s relationship with James B. Comey, whose firing as F.B.I. director is part of the special counsel’s investigation.
The effort to investigate the investigators is another sign of a looming showdown between Mr. Trump and Mr. Mueller, who has assembled a team of high-powered prosecutors and agents to examine whether any of Mr. Trump’s advisers aided Russia’s campaign to disrupt last year’s presidential election.

He needs more than the factual truth. His opponents spin up innocent remarks ("if Russia has the 30,000 emails ...") into a finding that Trump is working with the Russians.
Mueller needs to follow the DoJ regulations that cabin the scope of his jurisdiction. The press has been misrepresenting the scope of Mueller's jurisdiction. Whether or not the press reports are correct remains to be seen, but Trump should be pushing back on scope of jurisdiction.
Mueller's grant refers to Comey's March 20 testimony.
I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election and that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia's efforts.
To me, this means Mueller's jurisdiction investigates ONLY these angles (and any obstruction related events that occur as these angles are probed):
In relation to Trump defending himself agianst the army of accusers under Mueller's command, I think it is also fair for Trump to research and produce material up to and including the equivalent of the dodgy dossier. That would be a response no stronger than the attack made against him. This is a self-defense principle, he is entitled to use as much force in response, as he was confronted with in the first place. Draw the line at "dodgy dossier" type accusations.

Once upon a time, I would have agreed with you. But all you need to do is look at the gentlemanly and inoffensive Bush, who essentially lost his ability to govern effectively because he and anyone around him were the target of one demented witch-hunt after another - and he did nothing to resist. The same thing would happen to Trump, and his only chance is to fight back.

I think Sessions should fire Mueller, the acting FBI guy, and the assistant AG, then resign. Trump should then pull the nominee for the FBI and nominate Rudy as AG. Then Rudy could find Trump a director and assistant AG’s. Even the guy he has up as FBI Director is questionable.

The amount of corruption in the government is staggering, to the point of being difficult to believe.
Whatever the concentration of psycopaths, sociopaths and control freaks is, in the general public, the concentration is probably triple that in government service. That is becuase the function of the government in society is in the nature of lording over others - heaven on earth for socipaths and control freaks.
This sort of environment also tends to excuse and protect itself. Only the stupid and blatant excesses are corrected, and even then the perpetrators are often promoted.
