Sen. John McCain's office announced Wednesday he has a cancerous brain tumor.
McCain's office is optimistic of his return to his duties, saying "Further consultations with Senator McCain's Mayo Clinic care team will indicate when he will return to the United States Senate."
The tumor, a glioblastoma, is a highly malignant, aggressive, cancerous tumor, according to the American Brain Tumor Association. McCain is 80 years old. He is getting treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation, at the Mayo Clinic.
The Seventeenth Amendment established the rules of appointing vacancies in the Senate. In Arizona, if a senator dies, resigns or is expelled, Gov. Doug Ducey would appoint a replacement of the same political party.
The governor could choose to appoint himself. The person appointed would serve until the next statewide election.
Recall that Thurmond and Byrd both missed many Senate sessions in their final days. Neither resigned (IIRC).
McCain’s daughter is age 32, according to Wikipedia. He and the party could have her appointed to fill out his term. His current term began January 2017, so his seat is not up until 2022 — unless AZ has a special law for filling vacated terms.
I’m putting this in as my prediction. Governor Ducey appoints himself. It’s 7 months into a six year term. Ducey is up for re-election next year. Why wouldn’t he and he can, apparently.

It would not surprise me to see McCain stay in even if he couldn’t talk or feed himself, just to screw conservatives and Trump.
Ducey is a friend of DeWit, who is a Trumper. Word is DeWit would be the choice.
David Bossie of Citizens United met with DeWit and another guy-—forget his name-—a couple of weeks ago and said they would fund either of these guys vs. Flake. (But not Kelli Ward, for some reason).
Wasn't this the type of brain tumor that they were treating with the Polio virus in the past year or two?
Ever hear of Gov. Donald Russell or Gov. Wendell Anderson and their Senate careers? If you haven’t, there’s a reason for that.
At least she wouldn't have to worry about a brain tumor, since she seems to lack the necessary equipment to develop such a condition.

He will not have long “playing this for all he can wring out of it!” Looking at the statistics on this cancer, he could well be dead before the end of the year, but in any case sufficiently impaired to cause his involuntary departure from the Senate.
A close personal friend ( who was 77) died last Friday of this cancer. He was diagnosed last September and had all the recommended treatments including major brain surgery. Since about February he had been bed-ridden in a hospice, and by the time he passed, he could not even speak. For the good of our country ( and I know that’s a stretch for McCain) he should resign immediately so that a healthy person can take over his “duties.”
I voted against him in a primary 3 times. The first time there was nobody else on the ballot so I wrote in "Mickey Mouse".

Convince AZ voters that McCain’s years of service mean Cindy McCain should be appointed to replace him.
She gets appointed, and then two weeks later announces she is changing to RAT.

It was accidently discovered that a certain cold virus could treat some glioblastomas with very good results. that field of cancer treatment is now called viral therapy and they are a number of clinical trials looking at viral therapy for treating some cancers.
