Border Patrol union chief praises 'miraculous' drop in illegal immigration under Trump
Washington Examiner ^ | Jul 17, 2017 | Anna Giaritelli

The significant downturn in the number of illegal border crossers between the U.S. and Mexico is "nothing short of miraculous," National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd said on C-SPAN Monday.

"As far as the Trump administration's efforts on immigration, this is something they campaigned heavily on," he said. "At six months, where we are on meeting those promises, we are seeing nothing short of miraculous. If you look at the rhetoric that President Trump has given, it has caused a number of illegal border crossings to go down. We have never seen such a drop that we currently have."

"There's a vibe, there's an energy in the Border Patrol that's never been there before in 20 years that I've been in the patrol," Judd added in a separate Fox News interview.

This month, Customs and Border Protection reported a 53 percent decrease in the number of apprehensions at the southwest border since last year. The number also includes those deemed inadmissible. CBP sees apprehensions as a proxy for how many people are trying to cross the border, and says the drop in apprehensions indicates a drop in attempted illegal crossings.

Judd said the Trump administration commanded in two executive orders for border agents to fully carry out related laws, while the Obama administration kept agents from doing their jobs as was intended.

The thing is, Trump needs to BUILD THE WALL.

Or else, the first week of a new administration, whenever that is, all of the progress will reverse.

All of it. Completely.

Build the wall, Trump.

Build the wall, Trump.

Trump has never wavered on building the wall. You should be demanding that Congress support building the wall. They need to provide the initial funding.

You’d think someone would be reporting on a strong correlation between decreased illegal immigration and decreased gun sales since January.

This is all well and good.

But we need real progress - like fining and/or imprisoning employers, taking away all manner of freebies, withholding taxpayer dollars to sanctuary cities (jailing the mayor), and making English the official language.

The changes have to be structural; baked into the cake, so to speak, and not just because of who happens to be Chief Executive at the time.

Build the wall.

THAT is what we need. The wall.

Not this policy, or that policy. Something permanent.

Brandon Judd was on CSPAN's Washington Journal this AM. This sounds like some of that conversation. He was excellent at presenting the advantages of superior border and immigration control. He should be the gold standard for people being interviewed about aspects of the Deplorable agenda.

(I don't know what else to call it but the Deplorable Agenda. Traditional "Republicans" and "conservatives" don't espouse it except during campaign season)

I remember every democrat saying it would be impossible to get border jumping under control.

All it took was the will to do it.

SECRET: America ia still a "can do" country. Believe it.

Are you not aware of why the illegals have been coming here the past 40 years?

A wall is fine, but it won’t stop it if the incentives are still there.

Surprised you can’t see that.

Are you in the construction business by chance?

Trump didn’t need to build the wall to get these results. I certainly wish he would build the wall, but the threat of enforcement and the threat of deportation has fortunately resulted in a drop in illegal crossings all by itself.

If there is no forward progress on building a wall, then these reductions are likely to evaporate.

In the meanwhile, I would suspect that a large percentage of the remaining illegal crossings can be attributed to drug smuggling operations. Thus, the encounters by Border Patrol agents are probably more dangerous.

Nope.

I’m just saying, that all of the policy matters you mention, can be completely reversed immediately, with any new administration.

What cannot be quickly reversed, is what Donald Trump ran on.

I know there are a lot of people in both parties, who would love nothing so much as they would like to NOT build a wall.

Those people did not win the Presidency.

Trump won. Trump ran on building the wall.

That is what he needs to do. Sure he can do all the other things you mention too.

But we need permanence.

Say it loud and long, brother.Illegal immigration is not a border problem,it's an American problem that needs us all to stop.

____________

Exactly. The wall is just phase 1. Trump needs to fine employers who hire illegals. And he needs to stop all public services to anyone who can’t prove citizenship. Then you’ll REALLY see some decline in immigration.

We do not disagree.

Of anything of significance, really.

The RINOs are gumming up the works. But the building should commence anyway.

One issue is security for the construction people while it’s going on. But it’s not a barrier to getting it done, I know that.

All it takes is enforcing the laws.

I have been saying it for years but the GOP was determined to prevent us from electing anyone who would do it.

In every election since the last amnesty, the GOP has only nominated amnesty candidates committed to continuing the 30 year bipartisan policy of non-enforcement.

Trump broke through the Uniparty blockade.

My unsolicited $0.02?

This is good triage. For phase 1 (as you said), you need to stop the bleeding. This article said illegal entry is off 53%. I've read others on FR that it's off 70% and 97% - the higher number was specifically pertaining to Haiti, though, IIRC. Either way, the pendulum is swinging back.

No way of measuring those that self-deport, though I'm loving all of the sob stories in the media. I figure that media hysteria works in our favor, for once.

Next? Sanctions against employers. Removal of welfare bennies. Tax remittances back to Mexico. Take away the incentives for coming here.

I might even argue that a wall might not be necessary, with the correct enforcement of existing laws and selective application of new ones. Wonder if it's another misdirection by the Trump team....get everyone looking at the big shiny symbolic thing in the right hand while the real work gets done by the left hand behind the cape....

A wall may slow down the drug runners and terrorists.
