A 70-year-old veteran says hes out of a job after he tried to stop some thieves from leaving the Home Depot store where he worked. It appears what he saw as doing the right thing was against company policy.
Jim Tinney says trying to do the right thing has guided him pretty well in life.
In the Army, they train you to do things like that, Tinney said.
Recently, Tinney said he saw three men carrying tool sets worth thousands of dollars to the checkout area at Home Depot. He said they seemed nervous.
One of them hollered lets go, and they all grabbed their kits and started heading out, Tinney said.
Tinney said without thinking, he tossed the paint roller extension he was holding, and ran to stop one of the men.
I just automatically went like this and threw the stick at their feet, Tinney said.
The men ended up getting away. Tinney said he thought it was over, until two weeks later, when he was fired.
He said he never imagined his actions would get him fired.
No. I did not at all, Tinney said.
Tinney admitted he learned during training at the store not to confront shoplifters, but he said his decision to act was a reflex.

Shop at Home Depot, and have such theft added to your bill.
He would have been alright IF he had grabbed a toolbox himself and fled the store along with the other fellas- He wouldn’t have gotten fired then apparently-
It has been in the news for several years that Home Depot workers are fired for trying to stop shoplifters. Yet you would think the company would have to do something about it.
My final retail job was many years ago as a tech at a computer store. We had the same policy.
Some ahole came in one day, stuffed a laptop in the front of his pants and ran out the door. Shoplifters pissed us off, so almost the whole staff went sprinting after him. One of the sales floor guys had run track, chased him down a couple of blocks away, tackled him and held him for the police. Nobody got fired, it was funny in hindsight.
The only reason they have policies like this is because it is far too easy to litigate.
I believe they should caught, prosecuted and their likenesses put in facial recognition software to be shared amongst merchants with the immediate arrest for trespassing if they set foot in the store again.
Banks would seldom be robbed if tellers shot robbers on sight.
Exactly right. Home Depot will charge the honest customers more — and reward their lawyers and fat executives at the same time.
Home Depot = anti Honest Customer
Home Depot = anti Conscientious Employee
Home Depot = pro Political Correctness
Banks would seldom be robbed if tellers shot robbers on sight.

Banks are seldom robbed anymore.
When is the last time you heard about a bank robbery?
Shoplifting....monitor.
About twice a week...that’s just in my region.
There is something else. A shoplifter if confronted could do great harm if he/she has a weapon. It really makes more sense to watch the thief and follow him from a safe distance to see if he gets into a car/truck and then get the tag number.
“Banks are seldom robbed anymore.”
Yes, they are the one’s doing the robbing, of their customers. Can you say Wells Fargo? They would charge you for the use of your money if could get away with it.
4251 bank robberies in the US last year.
They should have given him a bonus & a raise.
“They should have given him a bonus & a raise.”
Agree. Firing him was un-Texan.

I still remember decades ago going to Vegas when I was underage. The first casino, we got to play slots for at least 10 minutes before being confronted and kicked out (politely). Next one was about 1 minute. Third one we barely made it in the door.
If Vegas can do what you suggest, stores should do just the same. As far as I know, they can still refuse service (or entry) to ANYONE provide it isn’t race (or, now, bathroom) based....so that would be a great response, perhaps for an enterprising young millennial, wanting to be the next Suckerberg.
Hispanic is my guess. Texans are completely wimpy about it. Illegal immigration. They make me sick. I’m a vet and the Texans let any hispanic walk all over me. I got yelled at by a Costco manager when I dared state I was offended by a line cutting non English speaker without an American dollar to get him through the line so I could go and get on with my day. Yelled at
Forget trying to say speak English
It’s a lot less than 5-10% (shrink) from theft. Closer to 0.5%-1%, but yes more stores do not want their employees confronting shoplifters. THe reason is if the employee gets hurt/killed, a single lawsuit could cost the same as 100,000 shoplifters (maybe 10k at HD, but 100k x for a regular retail isn’t that abnormal).
