I'm very sorry about the response time problems we've been having recently and now this page loading problem we're having today. I've called and left messages on John's phone, email, freepmail and facebook several times per day since Saturday. No luck. He seems to be off the grid. Don't know if he took a trip or his phone is broken, lost or turned off and he has no internet service in his new apartment or what, but I've been unable to reach him. Also do not have his new address. Hopefully, he'll check in soon and get it fixed. Don't mind telling you, I'm worried.
Meanwhile, until John finally checks in and gets it fixed, here's a temporary workaround:
At the top of the articles index page click: "Account" and then "My Preferences."
Set 20 messages per page
Set 20 results per page
Set them both to 20. You can change them back after John gets the problem fixed.

Prayers up.
Setting up a new server is a demanding job but once it was up and running there is NO excuse for the site not working properly every single day.
There are maybe millions of similar sites all over the world.
I visit 17 similar sites every day and maybe half a dozen others occasionally and none of them have problems like this site.
That said, this is by far my favorite and I am not happy when I can not read the latest and best here.
So what to do?
I don’t know who John is. Maybe he owns you but:
#1. You should tell him that he must have an emergency number that he will answer 24/7 regardless. Even if he is in bed with the most gorgeous woman alive.
#2. If the above is not possible, he must check the site a minimum of four times a day just to see that it is running OK. He does not need to read all of the information on the site,,,just check and see that it is up and running and that a few of the links work as they should.
#3. If neither of the above is possible or unacceptable, you need to get a new IT guy.
Because if this continues, your followers will be following someone else.
As I said, I really like FR and I hope you get John in gear, but I am beginning to think he is in over his head.
As of right now, nothing is working as it should.
You need to change the click number to 1........
I can’t imagine all the work it takes to keep this site up and running all the time. I don’t know what we’d do without it... but just want to thank you and John for all you do to let us have this outlet for fighting the rest of the world (it seems it’s the whole world) to save our Republic from the media and all who would destroy it.
Thank you!! Do you ever get a vacation?
That’s just stupidly funny right there.

Thanks for the advice.
I hope John hasn’t been kidnapped by Soros - google goons, as part of their ‘Net Neutrality’ scheme being perpetrated today.
(unfortunately, I’m only half joking)

Opera browser seems to be working a lot better than firefox for me (on linux)
Yeah the workaround works for me
Jim and John are patriots, not IT specialists.
oops...
Yet Jim was courteous in his reply. See #26.
“... I dont know who John is ...”
“... Maybe he owns you ...”
“... you need to get a new IT guy ...”

Pretty hard to fire your own son.
FYI
I changed the two settings to 20, as you suggested. If I log out, the sidebar is back. When I logged back in, however, everything went back to the way it was (no sidebar).
Also, the site is running EXTREMELY slow. I think it took more than a minute to open up the page for me to post this.
Hope John is okay and gets things working soon :-)
Which ones? I could use some new backups.
And p.s. John is Jim's brother, not some random IT guy.
John is Jim’s son. As a guy with 37 years in IT, may I gently suggest not cussing out the plumber when the basement is still full of water? Especially not in public. No offense. Thanks.
John is Jim’s son and they built this site and John has done wonders keeping us going. Since there’s a work around that’s been posted on several threads I don’t see what the big deal is.
IFR needs someone available 24/7. There are to many other sources of information for the impatient...Drudge, Lucianne, PJ Media, Breitbart, etc.
I am not knocking FR. I want to click on it and BINGO, there it is.
Curious. The 4 chan kids have been running a story about April Lorenzen all day and freerepublic has this going on? Coincidence?
Jim, Free Republic is a vital resource and communication medium for conservatives across the country. It's also a social gathering place and virtual 'front porch' for thousands of regulars. I don't think I could ever fully express our gratitude to you for founding and maintaining it all these years.
At the same time, FR is a business. In my own business, there are back-ups in place for every key function, just in case a principal employee is off the line for some reason. Is there no one who can jump in and handle technical emergencies if John is unavailable?
I'm also a parent, and feel your worry about John's absence. I hope he checks in soon.
This has been going on for about a year now to one varying degree or another. After 20 years of operation I wonder if some of the problems are related to the size of your database servers. If you want to keep it simple, maybe only keep posts for 5 - 10 years?.
