Ghana has successfully launched its first satellite into space.

GhanaSat-1, which was developed by students at All Nations University in Koforidua, was sent into orbit from the International Space Centre.

Cheers erupted as 400 people, including the engineers, gathered in the southern Ghanaian city to watch live pictures of the launch.

The first signal was received shortly afterwards. It is the culmination of a two-year project, costing $50,000 (£40,000).

It received support from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

The satellite will be used to monitor Ghana's coastline for mapping purposes, and to build capacity in space science and technology.

Congratulations Ghana! Your ambition of becoming a space-faring nation is now a reality!

Thanks also to Japan for their assistance in funding the GhanaSat-1, contributing to the engineering, assembling it in Kyoto, and then having Japanese astronauts toss it like a frisbee from the International Space Station after it arrived as part of a supply run.

Hmm...years ago Muhammad Ali boasted in verse that he was going to “turn Sonny Liston into a colored satellite”.

FYI the head nurse where Mom is in assisted living is a Ghanaian immigrant whom I trust with her life.

Oh Great! Another piece of junk up there to get in the way of other pieces of junk. Pretty soon they will have to start using freeway on ramp entry signals to launch.

Besides, how many times will they have to map their coastline that nobody cared about before? They can do that with prop aircraft after taking off and landing the damn thing a few times.

The word “launched” made me think that Ghana had built a rocket capable of reaching orbit. The article carefully avoids giving any details.

Propaganda piece. “We are now a space-launching country like the big boys!”

They built a satellite and loaded it aboard a Space-X supply rocket.

That's what it implies, doesn't it?

They built a satellite and loaded it aboard a Space-X supply rocket.

The satellite was built in Kyoto. How much assistance Japanese engineers provided, I don't know.

The article carefully avoids giving any details.

Yep. It did require a bit of investigating.

When I was in Ghana they couldn’t afford a Plymouth Satellite much less anything that could go into space. Friendly people but they made dirt poor people look rich.

The guilt ridden BBCers, being so desirous of black success, inflate Ghanaian pitiful contribution to a huge success.

A more truthful headline would have been - “Japan puts up satellite for Ghana”

Reminds me of Rush’s comments on the press regarding McNabb.

Fantastic news! Since Ghana now has flushing toilets in every home and has abolished poverty in general, as it has spare cash to fund a space program, all foreign aid payments must be suspended immediately. Thanks, U.N., I’m counting on you here. /s
