Swiss journalist Sacha Batthyany knew he belonged to an aristocratic family, centered around his respected aunt. He didn’t know about the murderous ball held in 1945, that led to a personal quest, threats from relatives and a book
One morning in April 2007 journalist Sacha Batthyany was approached by an elderly colleague at the Swiss daily where they both worked at the time. The colleague waved a newspaper clipping in front of him. It was an investigative report entitled, “The Hostess from Hell,” published by a German daily.
Glancing at the headline, Batthyany didn’t understand why he was being shown this article, but then he looked at the picture of the hostess and recognized it immediately. It was Margit, his father’s aunt —someone to whom the family demonstrated the utmost respect and also around whom they tended to tread carefully. So he started to read the piece.
In March 1945, it said, just before the end of World War II, Margit held a large party in the town of Rechnitz on the Austrian-Hungarian border to fete her Nazi friends. She, the daughter and heiress of European baron and tycoon Heinrich Thyssen, and her friends drank and danced the night away.
At the height of the evening, just for fun, 12 of the guests boarded trucks or walked to a nearby field, where 180 Jewish slave laborers who had been building fortifications were assembled. They had already been forced to dig a large pit, strip, and get down on their knees. The guests took turns shooting them to death before returning to the party. The organizer of this operation was Margit’s lover Hans Joachim Oldenberg. Margit’s husband, Count Ivan Batthyany, Sacha’s grandfather’s brother, was also at the party.

cells to rub together knew how the war was going to end.
It is clear to me that all who participated in the murder
of these 180 Jews had to have had a history of murderous
behavior that was well known. Joining in on a murder spree
for the first time when your side is losing badly makes
no sense.

Everyone here is assuming this is a true story. It may be, but there is so much bogus information about this period that I am skeptical. Did she turn them into lampshades?
Surely, unless lime was dumped on the victims, ground radar could find the grave.

Ivan and Margit had no burial in the family crypt at their Franciscan chapel.Ladislaus Batthyany was in the process of being beatified—2003.The third stage of the sainthood process started in 1944.

Wrong context to evoke that phrase. God has given us the power of reason and the ability to make a concious choice not to do evil. While each of us has the capability to do evil, each of us is solely responsible for our deeds, no external agent is necessary though temptation may come from an evil sources. Our forgiveness comes from God's mercy and grace.
A relative of mine did an interview about his time in WWII. (He was a cousin of my dad’s iirc). In the interview he talked about being in a concentration camp where they had the skin lampshades, cadavers cut in half, etc. I suppose he may have made it up, but the rest of the interview seemed pretty matter of fact.
Regardless of whether the reports of human lampshades are true or not - the mass graves that continue to be found are evidence enough. I recall the stories of our guys going into the towns near the death camps, and could smell the death from miles away. And the towns-people claiming to have no clue as to what was going on. Our guys made them carry the dead out of the piles and into the graves by hand.
Sounds like the perfect DNC fundraiser hostess.
