In a bipartisan 21-6 vote

That is significant.

Just as China very gradually instituted a policy toward the disputed islands, so we should gradually institute a new policy toward Taiwan.

I think that a similar method could be used with regard to Jerusalem being the capital of Israel. Don't say that we recognize Jerusalem as the capital. Just move a copy machine into a rented building in Jerusalam; a few months later move an employee to run the copy machine; then station a secretary to handle the communication to and from the copy/fax machine; and so on and so forth until we, for all practical purposes, acknowledge Jerusalem as the de facto capital of Jerusalem.

Are you noticing that all of a sudden the Senate is willing to tweak Russia and China constantly?

We haven’t seen this sort of thing in a long long time.

What this all about?

With Russia it’s very clear they want a war. Have they now lumped China in with it?

I say this, because I think Putin was willing to deal, and then they shut him down. Now they’re seemingly going after China too.

Are they that desperate to have a war, that they would actually seem to want to push Russia and China into being even better buddies?

I’ve wanted some push back on China for quite some time, but why are these guys agreeing with me all of a sudden?

Has anyone else noticed this?

YES !!! Been saying this since Trump got in. He has already done something similar. He is having US Marines posted at the new AIT building ( American Institute in Taiwan - the defacto embassy ). Of course port of calls will have to be ok’ed with the current government, but unlike Ma (KMT party ), I think the current president Tsai (DPP party) will agree.

I also think Trump should strongly consider granting Vietnam a similar status.

I had not realized until I got here two things.

First off like Taiwan there is a historical background between China and Vietnam. And perhaps worth consideration, there is in Vietnam, unlike the other countries in the region, a STRONG bit of attitude that China should mind it’s own business.

Maybe it’s time to lean more toward Vietnam as well.

Just saying.

Kaioshung is a nice city to visit. Had great food down there. Unfortunately a hurricane/typhoon had just hit the island and there was about 4 feet of water in the streets.

I think the hotel staff just went up to the roof and did their dinner fishing from there. You should have seen the size of the fish we had. Probably a 15-20 pounder, perfectly baked and sliced so that we could take out large square chunks of fish in our chopsticks.

Since I had the longest arms at the table, I got a lot more fish than others.

The people of (official name) the Republic of China (ROC), are very friendly, well educated, and hard working.

Just for shits and grins, the former president of Taiwan, Mark Ma (Cheo Jeung something or other) was a classmate of mine at the Summer Seminar for Sino-American Youth at Chengchi University. We knew he was going to become a political leader later on. Unfortunately, he became a little to soft on Red China and later lost re-election.

However, he was a nice person, well educated and a new friend, along with the rest of our Chinese student counterparts and hosts.

This step is mandatory given China's aggression in the S China sea.

Good for the Trump admin.

I am extremely pleased with this vote. Taking slow, steady steps towards recognizing one of the most advanced democracies in Asia is a good idea.

There are strains of VD in Taiwan that penicillin will not take out. I question the wisdom of setting naval personnel loose there.
