WASHINGTON—The Senate Armed Services Committee approved a major change in U.S. policy toward Taiwan as part of an annual defense-policy measure, voting to allow regular stops by U.S. naval vessels in a move that is likely to anger China.

In a bipartisan 21-6 vote, the panel approved re-establishing “regular ports of call by the U.S. Navy at Kaohsiung or any other suitable ports in Taiwan and permits U.S. Pacific Command to receive...

Just as China very gradually instituted a policy toward the disputed islands, so we should gradually institute a new policy toward Taiwan.

I think that a similar method could be used with regard to Jerusalem being the capital of Israel. Don't say that we recognize Jerusalem as the capital. Just move a copy machine into a rented building in Jerusalam; a few months later move an employee to run the copy machine; then station a secretary to handle the communication to and from the copy/fax machine; and so on and so forth until we, for all practical purposes, acknowledge Jerusalem as the de facto capital of Jerusalem.

Are you noticing that all of a sudden the Senate is willing to tweak Russia and China constantly?

We haven’t seen this sort of thing in a long long time.

What this all about?

With Russia it’s very clear they want a war. Have they now lumped China in with it?

I say this, because I think Putin was willing to deal, and then they shut him down. Now they’re seemingly going after China too.

Are they that desperate to have a war, that they would actually seem to want to push Russia and China into being even better buddies?

I’ve wanted some push back on China for quite some time, but why are these guys agreeing with me all of a sudden?

Has anyone else noticed this?

YES !!! Been saying this since Trump got in. He has already done something similar. He is having US Marines posted at the new AIT building ( American Institute in Taiwan - the defacto embassy ). Of course port of calls will have to be ok’ed with the current government, but unlike Ma (KMT party ), I think the current president Tsai (DPP party) will agree.

Why? China isn’t doing what it should to pressure North Korea. USA, in return, overtly takes a vote to have a more formal military relationship Taiwan. This is with the foreknowledge that if the USA so much as waves hello to Taiwan, China is perturbed.

I think there is some die-hard anti-Russian constituency in D.C.. They probably have some design for former Soviet region and Mid-East. Putin resists them all, and they are pretty upset. They want to carry on legacy from previous administration, which straddles both parties. To them, Russia and Mid-East are probably more important than China and N. Korea. Since this constituency is not reined on, we end up with two project proceeding together. Hence, simultaneous confrontation with two powers.

Icing on the cake would be personal invitation of Dalai Lama to White House. That will make China flip in no time.

Think about it.

When have the Republicans in Congress seen anything at all related to China as bad? NEVER!

If this is Trump’s plan, that’s fine with me. If these guys are venturing out on their own, it’s worth taking note of.

Not one word about the Spratley Island group, and China has been busy occupying them.

Trade? Couldn’t get our Congress to utter one whimper.

No all of a sudden, they want to stick their thump in China’s eye via Taiwan?

D1 < Scratches head...

If this is of Trump’s doing and fits into his plans, I’m okay with it. If not, WTH is going on?

Sorry about my typing errors in that last post.

I agree with your take on the Dalai Lama. China’s leadership would need their nitroglycerin pills handy.

I also think Trump should strongly consider granting Vietnam a similar status.

I had not realized until I got here two things.

First off like Taiwan there is a historical background between China and Vietnam. And perhaps worth consideration, there is in Vietnam, unlike the other countries in the region, a STRONG bit of attitude that China should mind it’s own business.

Maybe it’s time to lean more toward Vietnam as well.

Just saying.

China basically kicked out large U.S. corporations from their domestic market, and replacing them with copycat rival Chinese corporations which they are building up fast. Chamber-of-commerce folks are upset, I suspect. That could make lawmakers move against China.

It’s standard protocol for US Marines to be stationed at every embassy.

Okay. Sounds reasoned.

We need to cut them off, watch them crumble.

A young woman from Taiwan owns a condo in my building———she is beautiful.

She travels back and forth-—often.
