Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) on Thursday voiced his opposition to the Trump administrations agreement with Mexico on the sugar trade, saying the deal increases the costs for consumers.
I disagreethe new sugar deal hikes prices for consumers even more. Heres why," Toomey wrote on Twitter, quoting a tweet from President Trump and linking to his own remarks on the agreement.
Trump early Thursday touted the deal on Twitter, saying it is a very good one for both countries.
New Sugar deal negotiated with Mexico is a very good one for both Mexico and the U.S. Had no deal for many years which hurt U.S. badly, Trump said.
But Toomey, who hails from the state that is home to The Hershey Company, a chocolate manufacturer, argued the deal actually makes the problem worse, referring to current sugar prices.
In a speech earlier this month on the Senate floor, Toomey slammed the agreement, saying it is bad for American consumers and workers.
The fact is this is a bad deal for the United States. I am completely mystified as to why our Commerce Department would agree to it, Toomey said at the time.
Its a bad deal for U.S. consumers, and were all consumers. Its a bad deal for American workers. It completely fails to address the high price of sugar that we have in America today.

I have not changed my habits other than no HFCS. Still drink soft drinks, and whatever else. Lost 30 lbs in a few months.
According to the Princeton Study cited earlier the thread, HCFS is 48% more fattening. That’s plausible. 14 times is probably impossible because sucrose is already pretty bad.
And with a few more “wins” like this Hershey will make all of their candy somewhere besides the USA. Does “Buy American” include enriching just a few US Sugar producers? I suppose it does but then the logic for steel, rubber, and wood isn’t any different than sugar.
I just had to cut down on carbs and sugars of all sorts. It's amazing how just cutting out the soft drinks, microwave meals, and canned foods can help with that.
“If Hershey moved to Mexico why should Toomey care?”
The executives stayed in Pennsylvania. I suspect they are big donors.
Ever try Swedish Fish? Mostly Carnauba wax. You could wax your with them!! (Godiva is good chocolate. My wife loves a box of their stuff...)
I agree. I think HFCS is a cause of rampant diabetes. I take the sugar.

I can cut all of these but Chocolate. Not Chocolate.
If some liberal politician wants to tax sugar and sugar products for the health purposes that would probably be just fine.
...wax your car with them...
If Hershey moved to Mexico why should Toomey care?
...
Perhaps Hershey still owns shares in Toomey.
Completely ironic how one can go into most supermarkets and buy coca cola bottled in Mexico... with Sugar... and, in glass too!
Obviously, my case is anecdotal, but I cannot imagine that I am alone in my experience.
Where was this POS when Hersey moved its operations to Mexico?
Toomey better remember - Trump carried PA.
Another idiot Republican. What a surprise - NOT.
The only thing worse than Mexican sugar barons is American sugar barons. The sugar industry is a terrific case study of cronyism:

The corn robbers have a way to go before they even come close. Uncle Sugar loves sugar and sugar loves uncle. A pox on both their houses.
Free the sugar market!
It also contributes to acne.
You have it backwards. Restrictions on sugar imports make HFCS cheaper. If we allowed unlimited imports, sugar would be used in many products which currently use HFCS.
I like that sea salt chocolate made by Lindt.
That would be a neat trick, since they're both composed of the same sugars and contain the same number of calories.
Restrictions on sugar imports are not a subsidy to corn?
That, in addition to real subsidy.
