Panda Express has reached a settlement agreement with the U.S. Justice Department to resolve an investigation into whether the restaurant discriminated against non-U.S. citizens when reverifying their permission to work.
According to the U.S. Attorneys Office, the investigation concluded that Pandra Express required lawful permanent resident workers to re-establish their work authorization when their green cards expired yet made no such requests to U.S. workers when their work verification documents expired.
Under the agreement, Panda Express will pay a civil penalty of $400,000 and establish a $200,000 back pay fund to compensate workers who lost employment due to the companys practices. The impacted workers were let go beginning in May 2014.
Employers should ensure that their reverification practices comply with laws that protect workers against discrimination, said Acting Assistant Attorney General Tom Wheeler of the Civil Rights Division. The Justice Department applauds Panda Express for its cooperation during this investigation and its commitment to compensating workers who may have lost wages due to its documentary practices.
A little Trivia, the founder of Panda Express is from China and graduated before me from my little college in Baldwin, KS. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Cherng
U.S. workers work verification documents ?
Drivers and occupational licenses?
Just read 6 different articles- NONE of which explained this .
“Wait, US work documents expire?”
Not the docs, like a SS card. It’s when the “work verification documents expired.”
The forms filed containing the employee info apparently have to be renewed.
This has to be some BHO shakedown that is just getting cleared. IF Hillary had won the fine would have three more zeros.
We don’t have any Panda Express around here, so the only time I’ve ever gone there was when I’d visit my oldest son who lives outside of Albany, NY. The food was good, but they never seemed to have anything cooked, and you’d have to sit around and wait for them to cook your take-out. It didn’t matter what time you went there, they never seemed ready to serve customers. My son finally got tired of their bad service practices, and won’t go back there.
Green cards do expire every 10 years, and cost $540 for a new one. This is for a permanent resident.
Of course.
The article states “ U.S. workers when their work verification documents expired.”
These would be those that have a SS card. The SS card doesn’t expire like the green card, but the the verification docs do.
Getting a fine for making a green card holder show he/she is current is complete BS.
54 bucks a year its a bargain
What are “work verification documents” for US citizens?
US workers don’t have an expiration date. This is stupid
So is their MSG as I have found out to my dismay.
Rangoon’s....................
What is an American “work verification” document?
Rangoon’s not the capital anymore, so the name is obsolete. Try calling the dish Crab Naypyidaw.
Thank you. I learn something everyday.
Fire Tom Weeler.
Rangoons over all.
Non-US workers is 0bama speak for ilegals
These settlements don’t happen overnight. This was one of thousands of Obama’s “shakedowns” that lingered into Trump’s reign.
