Just as NYC Pride festivities got underway, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo had some timely news on Sunday: The artist Anthony Goicolea had been chosen to design the first official monument to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people commissioned by the State of New York.
On June 26, 2016, after the attack at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla., that left 49 people dead, Governor Cuomo formed the LGBT Memorial Commission to honor the fight for equal rights and remember victims of hate, intolerance and violence. A request for designs for the new memorial went out in October. It is to be built in Hudson River Park near the waterfront piers that have played a key role in the citys history as both a meeting place and a haven for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
In Mr. Goicoleas design, the monument takes the form of nine boulders, some bisected with glass that acts as a prism and can emit a subtle rainbow.
From Stonewall to marriage equality, New York has always been a beacon for justice, Governor Cuomo said in a statement. I am now proud to announce Anthony Goicoleas stunning design for this monument selected for the way it complements the landscape and communicates a timeless message of inclusion.

Not a good idea to approve of evil. Sends a very deranged message.
It could have been much worse.
Sometimes I wonder if Yellowstone Caldera needs to erupt. This country is going full Weimar Republic.
Because these people don't really seem to know what they are.
Who the heck would bring a child to such a place as depicted in that pic?
The “monument” to perversion should be a functioning, full size mental hospital.
How about a statue of Narcissus mesmerized by his own reflection?
I figured it would be a giant phallus, but since this commission was formed in the wake of the Orlando massacre, maybe a statue of Mohammed would suffice.
It looks like a broken, cut-rate Stonehenge. Perhaps the beauty will be in the landscaping that accompanies it.
“Let me guess; its a giant a**hole.”
First thing that came to mind.

Some people, mostly Freudians, view monoliths as phallic symbols. In this case, it seems appropriate. Even for the ostensibly female contingent.
We’re building monuments to sexual deviants now? This country really has gone into the toilet.
LOL!! As if no one knows what that means.
No, New York is. And people get all in a Huff about Ted Cruz indicting "New York Values" as a bad thing.
I think it’s perfectly fine as a winning design. It looks unnatural, unbalanced, out of place with no inherent design philosophy that’s either inspired by God or man.
In other words, here’s a bunch of rocks that look like they don’t mean a thing.
Well yes, yes it does.
Isn’t it cheaper to just install a beard on the Statue of Liberty?
“Sometimes I wonder if Yellowstone Caldera needs to erupt.”
Yes, when I read this I started thinking about Pompei and how it was destroyed by a volcano. When we visited Pompei I was immediately struck by the phallic symbols everywhere and the obvious overemphasis on sex. At a certain point, like Sodom and Gomorrah, God may say ENOUGH!
