He appears not to be as much of a problem as the Democrats hoped.
What if Republican voters who dont particularly like President Donald Trump are also able to compartmentalize their votes? What if they dislike Democrats more than they do the president? What if, rather than being punished for Trumps unpopularity, local candidates are rewarded for their moderation? This would be a disaster for Democrats. And Tuesdays runoff election in Georgias Sixth District shows that it might be possible.
Now, had Jon Ossoff come out ahead of Karen Handel, the coverage would have painted this as a game-changing moment: a referendum on conservatism itself, a harbinger of a coming liberal wave, and a rejection of Trumps disastrous presidency. It would have illustrated that Democrats had figured out how to flip those suburban and affluent Republicans who arent crazy about the president.
Perhaps some of that will still play out during the midterms, because one race (or even four) doesnt tell us everything we need to know. Every district is unique. Still, there are definitely ominous signs for Democrats.

Hate to break it to everyone but the Republican party was sunk until Donald Trump came along
Don’t worry the @sses in congress will destroy the party
I predict a large number of Johnny come latelys to the Trump bandwagon in the next three years.
What if . . . they actually like Trump, National Review jerk?
Hate to break it to everyone, but the Republican party was sunk until Donald Trump came along!
Fixed it.
Egg McMuffin? Erik Erikson? Bill Kristol? Jonah Goldberg? Glenn Beck?
what if, rather than being punished for Trumps unpopularity..
The underlying error among those who don't get Trump is the belief that those who support Trump are mistaken in their perception of Trump and once enlightened, Trump's support will subside like a Florida sinkhole.
It just isn't working out that way. Those who support Trump get Trump. They got him from the first time he opened his loud, sometimes foul, sometimes braggadocios mouth. They got him when he punked little Marco and when he punked Jeb! and when he punked Comey. And the more stuff they throw up the more fed up Trump's supporters are with the constant obstruction, as if stop Trump is some sort of worthy policy goal. It never was and isn't now.
Exactamundo. I've read a few articles along the lines of, conservatives-are-selling-out-in-order-to-support-Donald-Trump. Guess what? The Great Society failed, but the Republican establishment and, yes, the conservative movement, have failed to reverse the Great Society. So, why should we oppose Trump on the grounds of, say, “Trump hasn't declared that he will undo the Great Society”...when we know NO ONE can?
“What if, rather than being punished for Trumps unpopularity, local candidates are rewarded for their moderation?”
WTF
More garbage from National Review. Trump is the reason the GOP still
controls both The House and Senate.
The latest parlor game for the Dem movers & shakers.
*...Trumps unpopularity...*

It seem, by the results of the election, Trump’s popularity is pretty high outside the beltway “professional politicians”....
Imagine if a Russell Kirk or a WF Buckley were commenting on the present scene and trying to make sense of it all and how it fit in to conservatism as they defined it.
Would they start with a number of false assumptions to try to demonstrate why, what they are observing can be contrived to make some sense to enfeebled brains, or would they start with the facts on the ground, and try to figure out where their conservative movement stands in relationship to the political winds and how they need to trim their sails, e.g. do they beat against the running tide, or put up all canvass and run with it at breakneck speed. Instead of all of that, they are navigating according to the precepts of Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll.
Just read the National Review line laugh and go to the next post.
“Hate to break it to everyone but the Republican party was sunk until Donald Trump came along”
I agree. You hit the nail on the head.
I hope Republicans will wake up and realize this also, very soon.
Stupid #nevertrumpers. Trump is more popular than the Republican Party. The question is whether the party will sink Trump.
That's a Paradigm Shift for those in Rio Linda.
The party will not sink, but should throw RINOs overboard; they are deadweight, stuck in the mud. Some of them are human sandbars.
