As negotiations between Britain and the EU over Brexit get underway, a senior German politician has declared that a European Army is inevitable. Hans-Peter Bartels, the parliamentary commissioner for the Armed Forces, insisted: In the end, there will be a European Army.
Bartel alleged the age-old system of national armies accountable to national governments was disorganised, technically fragmented and duplicate structures unnecessarily.
He claimed Europes peoples do not want to go down the solitary national path anymore. Not in Germany, not in the Netherlands, not in the Czech Republic and not in Italy.

Why would you expect people not to mock you Herr Bartels, when you never learned to use plurals?
I didn’t know he spoke for Italy Czech Republic, Netherlands and every body else :)
People say I’m nuts (and I am :)) but another war in Western Europe is NOT as implausible as some think.
Sure they have their hands full with muzzies, who would love to see infighting among the W European countries.
If not outright fighting.
What if a few countries refuse to join the European Army?
They’ll even likely allow Arabs in their army...that should work out swell.
The Germans sure have a propensity to try to screw Europe up. They are very creative and means of doing it. Who would have ever thought that in the name of pacifism they could still aggressively screw Europe up
I guess you could say Germany is the most passive aggressive Nation on the face of the Earth
Been there, done that...
If so, it’ll be made up of muzzies and they will be out attacking anyone not a muzzie. The Germans will go, “we didn’t know they would do THAT!”
Been there, done that...
The EU has rules. You can’t refuse.

Oh, so the nations of Western Europe should give up the right to defend themselves because some structures are unnecessarily duplicated.
Powerful argument there, Herr Bartel!
Same poster comes in Dutch, Norwegian, Romanian, Hindu, Czech, ...
That’s a Turk, not an Arab. There was a Hindu SS Division, whom the Germans did not take seriously, but used their existence as a propaganda weapon against the British in India.
It is a quite realistic Franco-German project and I am in favour of it. The contemporary nations in Europe are too small to compete against China, Russia, India or the US. Therefore we Europeans have to consolidate our means. No matter if we speak about economy or millitary. Otherwise we will end up like the UK. Poor and meaningless.
In the End There Will Be a European Army
All run by the Germans, of course.
“The EU has rules. You cant refuse.”
To those of us here in the U.S., WWII (72 yrs ago) seems like an eternity. But, to the Europeans, especially those who reside in countries that were brutalized by the Germans, it was only yesterday. So, there is still a deeply embedded distrust of the Hun and his love of military marching songs. A European Army? Ain’t never gonna happen....
Holy Roman Empire Redox!
Still they need a hapless Hapsburg on top to get it right.
Ein Reich under Mohammed.
Europe went for a great length of time without standing armies, instead relying on mercenaries to carry out their grievances against each other. Doing so saved a lot of money and avoided a lot of collateral damage.
The reason there will not be an effective Euro-army is because nobody wants to either pay for it, or man it with their own citizens.
