Afghanistan: Just walk away

Our involvement in Afghanistan is untenable because the country is untenable. No matter what is done, Afghanistan will fail because of its galloping population growth.

When the U.S. became involved in 2001, the country had a population of 20.5 million. Now it is 34.4 million, up nearly 70 percent. In the intervening 16 years, the U.S. spent about one trillion dollars and 2,000 lives in stabilizing Afghanistan. All the stability and free food provided just created a perfect breeding environment for the natives.

The population growth rate has settled at 3.0 percent per annum. At that rate, in another 16 years, there will be 55.2 million Afghans, most of whom will need imported grain to keep body and soul together. The Afghani proclivity to breed will only be curbed by starvation. That will happen at some stage because, even if we wanted to underwrite that population expansion, getting the necessary quantity of food into the country will become more and more difficult. Perhaps that situation is beginning now. The U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization has reported that 8.4 million Afghans are in an acute food insecurity crisis.

Sad to say we cant leave right now, if the west leaves and A-Stan goes falls into chaos then that will make the situation in the world worse I.E. more Refugees going into Europe and so on, however I do agree after this there should be no nation building, let this be the last time.

“The goal there is eliminating the incubators and safe havens of jihad, not nation building.”

Bullcrap. If that were the goal it would have been done in 2002 in less than 6 months. A few thousand sorties of B-52s carpet bombing the country would do it.

“If we wanted to really change Afghanistan, we might consider opening internet cafes all over the place and offering free laptops to everyone.”

Screw that. Not one more nickel that isn’t in the form of American made bombs, preferably 2,000 pound ones.

When they write the history books about this era in modern U.S. history, it's going to be a close race between George W. Bush and Lyndon Johnson to see who was the worst president of the last 50 years.

Jimmy Carter remains eternally grateful over those two @ssholes from Texas, for sure.

No one has ever tamed Afghanistan and no one ever will.
We have wasted enough lives and treasure.
Never should have gone in at all.

Interesting, rhetorical question: what makes Germany and Japan different from Afghanistan and Iraq?

Both Germany and Japan have done very well. Iraq and Afghanistan not so much. I wonder if it is more than lack of effort? People pushing nation-building have probably looked at this.

Some differences:

1. culture.
2. religion.
3. infrastructure.
4. industry and economy.
5. lack of law enforcement and rule of law.

Germany and Japan were bombed nearly back to the Stone Age before they were rebuilt. This comparison gets tiresome quickly.

What you are suggesting is genocide. Not everyone in Afghanistan is a jihadi or even supports jihad.

You don't actually believe an American president is going to commit genocide in the way you suggest?

Okay. Seems like the recommendation FReerepublic needs to send to President Trump (since we’re not sure of his handle here on FR) is that we pull out of A-stan. Right? ;-)

Agreed. Good point. Although, Japan was probably in better shape after the war. It would have been a lot worse for Japan if the war had continued conventional vs nukes. Dropping the bomb ended the war quickly.

So what are the differences?

Culture? Afghanistan people are nomadic?

Your point? Afghanistan is already at the Stone Age.

...Now it is not good for the Christian's health to hustle the Aryan brown,
For the Christian riles, and the Aryan smiles and he weareth the Christian down;
And the end of the fight is a tombstone white with the name of the late deceased,
And the epitaph drear: "A Fool lies here who tried to hustle the East"...

...Take up the White Man's Burden, The savage wars of peace—
Fill full the mouth of famine and bid the sickness cease;
And when your goal is nearest the end for others sought,
Watch sloth and heathen folly bring all your hopes to nought...

Unfortunately perpetual ‘war’ is the goal.

It’s not really war, but prolonged occupation with war as a veneer to justify spending billions and billions of dollars.

The more hopeless the purported cause the better to those who benefit from these prolonged engagements. The same in Syria-Iraq and in Africa.

“What you are suggesting is genocide.”

Were Berlin or Dresden genocide? How about Tokyo, Nagasaki, or Hiroshima. Were those genocide?

“You don’t actually believe an American president is going to commit genocide in the way you suggest.”

I most fervently hope one does. And the sooner the better in my view.

Have a nice day.

If Afghanistan is already at the Stone Age, then it was a complete waste of time and lives to do anything over there after 2001.

How long do you think it's going to take them to get up to iPads, ATMs and 93 octane gasoline? I wouldn't venture a guess, but I'll bet all three of those will be obsolete here in the U.S. by the time they get there.
