Concern is growing in a conservative, remote corner of Oregon as people start arriving in a national forest for a Rainbow Family of Living Light annual gathering, a counter-culture get-together expected to draw thousands.
Officials with the Malheur National Forest said this week that around 600 Rainbow Family members are already camped at a gathering site near Flagtail Meadow and that between 10,000 and 30,000 are likely arriving by July 4, when the multi-day event peaks with a prayer for world peace.
People with small children, those with disabilities and senior citizens were among those who wrote to the event's Facebook page, discussing the site near the town of John Day in eastern Oregon, accessibility and bus routes.
Some commentators expressed concern about keeping the place hygienic.

Almost 25 years ago the RF held their gathering in Pocahontas County, WV. I worked at the closest full service hospital to their festival. Surprisingly few problems. They cleaned up after themselves, no law enforcement problems reported and no visits by the RF to the ER. They actually spent money in the local economy. However that was a long time ago with I guess a better class of hippie.
Great minds...
Smoke those marijuana filled pipes and joints for world peace. As for prayer who will they be praying to but a diversity of all gods except the true One.
There was a Rainbow gathering in NC about 20 years ago where hundreds of people came down with giardia.
Not only was Woodstock farmer Sam Yasger smart to get some $$ out of his rental land the hippies left his fields full of free fertilizer-- organic mind you.
No it was the other way around. The Rainbow People were hippies way back from late 60's. The flames co-opted the symbol later on.
To any ISIS who may be lurking, here’s a target no one would mind if you hit.
Shall we assume all attendees are WALKING to Oregon from other states to lessen their carbon footprint upon Mudder Erf?
Bookmarking this for a follow up in two weeks. I’m pretty sure they’ll leave a horrible mess behind them.
“whats an epa? “
It’s a government induced enema.
I heard that with this Rainbow stuff also comes the Drainbow crowd. Essentially these are the hucksters, thieves and criminals that use the Rainbow thing as cover. Read about it yesterday somewhere else.
They’ll lay dumps and needles, crud and nastiness of every nature throughout the area....and then smile when they leave knowing someone else will clean up their mess.
A few years ago there was a Rainbow Gathering in rural NorthWest Arkansas. Petty crime spiked along with a number of adolescent runaways.
Hippies are the worst possible expression of adult liberal children.
Liberal authorities such as The Park Service (overwhelmingly liberal, in my experience) are the worst possible expression of adults for those children.
Basically...we will tell them there are rules, ask them to sign a paper saying they will follow the rules, and then do nothing if they don't follow the rules.
How about just saying they will close the park to them?
After what happened with the Dakota Access Pipeline protests and the gigantic environmental mess they left behind, I hope they do a similar fast cleanup after this gathering.
You’re probably right.
They own a fake rainbow with only 6 colors. The real rainbow is owned by God and it has 7 colors.
There is a Rainbow Farm not too far from here. I used to know the mail carrier that delivered their mail.
He had dozens of funny stories of “those crazy hippies” This was over 20 years ago. Most things wouldn’t seem so shocking today.
He said when they would come out to get the mail they never wore clothes except when it was raining they put on their boots :0)
Wonder how many will ‘malinger’ longer than 7/7.
Jesse Jackson had it first.
