If any US citizen becomes, say, a British Subject, do they lose any US benefits? Social Security? Medicare? Since the other country does not notify the US, the individual can maintain two passports, and does continue to own property in both countries.
Is there any downside to taking on another citizenship?
If a US Citizen Becomes a Citizen of Another Country is Anything Lost Here?>>>>>>>>>>
Not according to international law, but citizenship in another country of a US citizen is not recognized by US law, except in very limited instances. It is possible to conduct oi=neself as a foreign citizen so that one can loose US citizenship, but generally a court hearing and due process are required for a loss of US citizenship.
It used to be that an American could not take another citizenship.
But that is long gone.
Dual Citizenship is a lie. One can not be a loyal citizen to two different countries, because their is the possibility that those two countries are or will be opposed to one another.
But it is a lie that many sophisticated people are comfortable telling, so I guess there is no downside... except for all the lying.
But do you actually lose anything?
This individual collects ss and medicare, uses US based healthcare, takes advantage of all US perks.
I don’t see that life has changed for her except that she now has British benefits too.
There are thousands of dual nationals working in the Federal Gov’t. Many dual nationals hold top security clearances.
One can even serve in a foreign military and hold top US security clearance.
so it actually doesn’t matter. Thanks.
Perhaps not.
Lying is often beneficial. That is why people lie so often.
Loyalty is often costly. That is why so many people are disloyal.
Benedict Arnold was a kind of like a dual citizen between the US and UK, and he is universally liked and respected to this day!
Your friend should be careful that she does not get socked with UK taxes. I pay about half my income in various US taxes. If I had to pay UK taxes too, I would be in the hole every time I got a paycheck!
A neighbor, from Barcelona told me he is now collecting SS benefits from Spain and the USA...
I am sure she pays UK taxes. She is not wealthy and some of her income is cash, I would guess. I doubt she pays US taxes.
where would she lie?
I am not sure anyone questions her citizenship.
He is?
re: taxes. Every US Citizen or green card holder must declare all their income to IRS regardless of source.
Under Mexican law, a person born in the US of Mexican parents is automatically a Mexican citizen.
If she never recites the Pledge of Allegience or takes any kind of an oath of loyalty to the United States, she would not need to lie.
It could be that she really does not have any loyalty to this country or any other, which would mean she is not lying at all. Some people really are that sophisticated and clever.
Of course, why you would have anybody like that as a friend is your business...
And if TSHTF, you just know your friend is going to be waving her passport and banging on the gates of the nearest US Embassy, pledging loyalty and demanding to be let in.
I believe it is a form, some documents showing ID and American citizenship and a hundred bucks or so .... She wants (she says) to do it to continue to support Duterte as President of the Philippines .... we both love him ....
So as far as I know, nothing is lost to her American status.
“...And if TSHTF, you just know your friend is going to be waving her passport and banging on the gates of the nearest British Embassy, pledging loyalty and demanding to be let in. ...”
there fixed it for you
LOL
Well, some embassy, anyway...
The nasty secret, of course, is that an American Passport and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee at an American Embassy, and nothing else. When you are outside the country, you are on your own. The US Government does not give a damn.
Look at this poor kid who got snatched up in North Korea and killed. The the US Government do anything about that?
“... The US Government does not give a damn...”
au contraine mon amie. You just connections like Marc Rich
