Food is not the critical commodity, water is. Here is Texas, where I choose to live, I would need a deep well to have my own source of water. Then, I would need electricity to power the pump to get the water out.
I have months of food available, but only weeks of water. Combined with summer heat with no electricity limited rain, that is the issue for us.
If you’ve got wind you can get that well water up. The typical FReeper disdain for anything remotely “green” due to the admittedly obnoxious politics associated with the whole thing is understandable but very short-sighted. Windmills as well pumps have a very long and practical history. Not pie in the sky in the least.
Then you need to know the location of streams or lakes nearby (within a few miles), containers (gallon jugs) and delivery system (wheel barrow?), and water filtration.
Fact is, most of us don't have a water source on our property and cannot store enough water. We have to have alternate sources.
Texas eh? I give you - The Texas Rainwater Harvesting Manual.

I know next to nothing about this subject, but could you get a backup hand pump for your well? Or is it too deep for that?
Regards,
PS: I always learn so much from these threads, even though I don’t really like thinking about SHTF scenarios because being on Long Island, if the S really does HTF....I’m in big trouble.
