Watch live: A huge fire has engulfed a 24-story apartment block in West London.
I have experience in NYC fleeing fire. Luckily for us it was contained next door. Prayers up!
“a new communal heating system”
I wonder if it was gas or electric?
was the fire inside to outside or outside to inside or both?
Same here. I refuse to live & even work in a high-rise For that reason- they are firetraps. What will you do? Run outside on the 20th floor? Right now I live on the second floor apartment and I do worry because the landlord will not fix anything. I have 3 outlets that are not working. I also know a few of my neighbors outlets do not work. So that has been in back of my mind.
The early video I saw showed the fire burning on the exterior of the building on the lower floors, and most likely some apartments as well. It rapidly spread up the side of the building as it did it shattered windows and spread inside.
As for the heat, I have seen several complexes employ a central gas fired boiler providing hot water to individually controlled unit heaters in the apartments. Some also will have individual gas fired heaters, but on one meter paid for by the landlord instead of 200 individual meters.
From what I have seen reading through this thread, this isn’t a ‘propane’ refrigerator like in the RV’s. It is a greenie refrigerator that doesn’t have any evil freons as a refrigerant, but uses iso-butane as the refrigerant. Probably because it is better to blow the building up than to damage the ozone layer.
If I remember correctly the ‘gas’ refrigerators as in RV’s use something like ammonia as the refrigerant and the gas flame supplies the energy instead of Reddi Kilowatt. My Aunt had a gas refrigerator on their farm out in the Black Swamp in NW Ohio when I was growing up - of course the swamp was drained by then..
They had oil wells on the property and used the gas coming off the well closest to the house for heating, cooking, and the refrigerator. I can imagine that should a leak occur it could get explosive but it sounds as if this London thing is a different type of bird.
I don’t know what originally started the fire, but the cheap Chinese cladding could have made it spread in such a deadly fashion so fast.
I don’t know. I am hearing a lot of muslims lived there.
Yes, I suspect there will need to be a huge push to get that kind of garbage off buildings fast. I wonder how vast the problem will turn out to be, how many structures have been done with it?
Imagine if London had been built with stuff like this back in the day when the Luftwaffe was bombing..... ofc they didn’t have too many 27 story residential buildings in 1940, I don’t think!
Built in 74. How do you know it had sprinklers?
Good call on the UK “enviro” fridges..it’s true, they are using butane & propane as refrigerant as a “green” substitute...from 2009:

The “3-way”(120v/12v/propane) RV refrigerators are ammonia-based coolant technology.

I bet the TRUE cause of the fire will not be the OFFICIALLY REPORTED cause.
Agreed. Particularly if it is a terrorist act
I never heard the word “cladding” before today. I feel really dumb.
Building was clad in Aluminum Composite Material panels.
Some of these are fire resistive. Some are not.
I’m guessing the ones used in this particular building were not.

This may be a good investment.
cheap way for the mooselimbs to kill.
Gallon of petrol poured in the basement of a large building.
Especially in the middle of the night.
Watching a live news feed last night. Comment was embedded. Have no idea if true
Met Police presser. 6 dead, number will rise. 74 injured. Giving phone numbers for inquiries and aid...
