I read that as Norris' wife relating what she felt Norris himself was thinking when he "took one look" at her. Perhaps if there were single quotes around 'I'm about to lose my wife'...?

I agree. It may be slightly flawed on the page, but I think you correctly see what was intended to be conveyed.

You are probably correct. But a professional writer should compose a piece in such a way that the reader is not left to speculate about what he means.
