Obama tells adoring crowd in Berlin: ‘We can’t hide behind a wall’

Barack Obama received a hero’s welcome when he reunited with Angela Merkel for the first time since leaving office, calling on the audience to engage in democracy and telling the tens of thousands in Berlin: “We can’t hide behind a wall.”

Speaking in front of the Brandenburg Gate, which was once cut off by the Berlin Wall, the former US president was greeted with cries of “Barack, Barack” as he urged the 70,000-strong crowd to “push back against those trends that would violate human rights or suppress democracy or restrict individual freedoms” and to “fight against those who divide us”.

He said he was heartbroken by the suicide bombing in Manchester on Monday, which killed 22 people. Calling the world a “very complicated place”, he said: “We can see the terrible violence that took place just recently in Manchester. It is a reminder that there is a great danger of terrorism and people who would do great harm to others just because they’re different. How heartbroken we are by the loss of life, and we grieve with the families.”(continued)

As I wrote recently, if we saw Merkel embrace Trump, we can imagine the Fake News...what's going on? There must be some side deal. Trump is really a Globalist. It's all Ivanka and The Prince's doing, Bannon is on his way out... Yada yada yada...

However, compare Merkel/Obama with Helmut Kohl - a slightly Reaganesque and dare I say Trumpian (former) German leader, insoafar as "Kohl faced stiff opposition from the West German political left, and mocked for his provincial background, physical stature and simple language." Per Wikipedia, Kohl:

-published the book Aus Sorge um Europa ("Out of Concern for Europe") outlining criticisms of Merkel,

-was widely quoted in the press as saying, "Die macht mir mein Europa kaputt." ("She's destroying the Europe that I have built."), joining former German chancellors Gerhard Schröder and Helmut Schmidt in their similar criticisms of Merkel's policies in these two fields,

-Kohl was visited in 2016 by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and released a joint press statement regarding the European migrant crisis, saying that both doubted that Europe was capable of continuing to absorb refugees indefinitely.

Seeing Obama and Merkel having a love-fest is yet another "eh" moment for me...tell me something new. However, the fact that Trump is more aligned with Kohl, and that Kohl is not aligned with Merkel, and that Kohl is aligned with history, gives me comfort that we really did elect the right guy.
