It took school and police officials just a few minutes to extinguish 16-year-old Corey Walgren's promising future. All they did was utter two words: child pornography.
Corey, a junior at Naperville North High School in Naperville, Illinois, was a perfectly normal, social, good-looking 16-year-old. He was an honor roll student with dreams of attending a Big Ten college. He had typical interests for a teenager boy: hockey, fishing, and, yes, girls.
Corey committed suicide in January, just hours after a school resource officer confronted him about an alleged illegal item on his cell phonea recording of Corey having sex with a female classmate. The girl had informed a dean at the school that she believed Corey had played the recording for his friends (it's not clear whether he did), which prompted the authorities to summon Corey to the principal's office. They called his mother and told both of them that Corey was being investigated for possession of child pornography.
Corey left the meeting, headed to a nearby parking garage, and jumped.
That's all according to a heartbreaking story in The Chicago Tribune, which obtained police records of the case and spoke with Corey's parents about his death.
"I think they wanted to scare him straight," Corey's mother, Maureen Walgren, told the Tribune. "Instead, they scared him to death."

If the girl made a mistake, it was only that she did not go to the police instead of the school officials.

Oh, that’s all she did that was wrong, huh?
How about sleeping around and allowing her partner to record the deed? Disgusting.
Agreed.
-The alternative of acting like it was no big thing is not a good alternative, either.
I’m not doing that nor do I see any other posts here that I can reasonably read that into. -
see following:
Consenting kids = child porn; consenting adults = meh.
Yeah, but the cop got home safe. I bet he feels not a moments remorse over this. I bet none of those involved do.
More kids are arrested, and even jailed, for behavior that would have earned them detention in saner times.
She is guilty of making child porn too.
1/3 the population are outrightly criminals or potentially criminal as a result of capricious laws,
Geez...my dad didnt have all of these rules when he was in high school.
Care to explain how she isnt just as culpable in making the video as the boy was?
should she return the money he gave her? -——THE WINNER
Excuse me, Kim Kardashian and a host of other celebrities that have become popular and noticed by their smut tapes.
Even a kid as stupid as me could recognize the damage that could do to someone else....

Parents today have failed miserably in instilling the principles of gentlemanly and ladylike behaviors in their children. I am just astounded at how sexual morality has deteriorated in less than 50 years.
Well said.
I’m not too sure that the resource officer wasn’t talking
out of his ass when he mentioned a child porn charge
to the under 18 kid. Either way he should let
real law enforcement handle that aspect.
She is guilty of making child porn too.
That was my comment and it's a simple fact of Illinois law as the link and quote I provided support.
Care to explain how she isnt just as culpable in making the video as the boy was?
That was also my remark and it hasn't been refuted. It certainly doesn't indicate that I have no other opinions about the story as a whole. In fact I directly spoke to the aspect of it that you're complaining I was dismissive of. I think that suitably destroys your straw man.
+1
I think you are mistaken about who was responsible. No male is now considered mature in the USA until he reaches 30. That is no joke.
This youngster was too immature to evaluate anything logically and became devastated by the results of his ownbehavior. The cop was responsible because he did not take into account the immaturity of the young man, the significance of his own words, “child porn”....despicable man. Unless he has sexual problems himself, I bet he, too, had sex when he and his partner were both under age. Or was he better than that? Or did no one want to touch him?
Actually child porn is a pathetic description of teen sex. I am sure we can do better.
In the end, a lovely young man was essentially murdered.

Jesus Christ, this thread has lost all sanity. The reason I got so heated earlier is because I teach at an alternative school; I see the results of horrible parents making excuses for the “immaturity” of their kids.
This is not an instance of “immaturity”. Adults do this kind of stuff all the time. It’s an instance of depraved behavior. The excuse making (and enabling) needs to stop.
How did you jump to those conclusions? Do you think she could not see his cellphone in his hand? Do you think she did not tell him where to prop the cellphone so she could do her duck face in the camera just right. Of course the girl knew! That's how she knew he had the recording. Kids today do this sort of thing because they see everyone else doing it (in their clique).
She took part in making it.

Say what? If you were to watch that video, you would be watching child porn.
Murdered? Hoo boy. I bet you also believe the cop forced those poor children to have sex and filmed them doing it.
“Sad as this story is, The kid himself was responsible for what he did is a bare truth.”

Absolutely.
Society today ALWAYS wants to blame someone else.
Most young guys would probably be angry or frightened if this happened to them but they would not kill themselves.

He wasn’t. That’s a real thing.
Both are “children”, per se. So, kinda hard to imply an “adult” was exploiting them. That is the point.
Far as I can tell, they both did it consensually, so hard to classify it as “porn”, as if it was exploitation.
That’s all. I certainly am disgusted by any immoral behavior as they clearly performed, but if using common sense, I’d say it’s not “child porn” when they are both minors in the legal sense.

You have GOT to be kidding.
.
I’m not sure we know much about if she was in on it or not. She could have been, thinking it was going to be just be between them. Or not, it could have been secretly recorded or something.
I am so glad phone video camera and internet sharing was not around in my younger days. This kind of thing is not uncommon now, it’s part of the pornification of our culture. I just can’t see all this being looked at as a positive thing for society in 100 years.
