IBM Says No to Home Work

International Business Machines is giving thousands of its remote workers in the U.S. a choice this week: Abandon your home workspaces and relocate to a regional office -- or leave the company.
The 105-year-old technology giant is quietly dismantling its popular decades-old remote work program to bring employees back into offices, a move it says will improve collaboration and accelerate the pace of work.
The changes comes as IBM copes with 20 consecutive quarters of falling revenue and rising shareholder ire over Chief Executive Ginni Rometty's pay package.
The company won't say how many of its 380,000 employees are affected by the policy change, which so far has been rolled out to its Watson division, software development, digital marketing, and design -- divisions that employ tens of thousands of workers.
The shift is particularly surprising since the Armonk, N.Y., company has been among the business world's staunchest boosters of remote work, both for itself and its customers. IBM markets software and services for what it calls "the anytime, anywhere workforce," and its researchers have published numerous studies on the merits of remote work.
In the past, IBM has boasted that more than 40% of employees worked outside traditional company offices, and a May 4 post on the company's Smarter Workforce blog stated that "telework works."

Stupid move IMO. Most commutes cost workers an hour or 2 a day...not to mention the automobile expenses and danger in traffic.
Going to the office can't improve collaboration in the nascent world of VR.

Uht-Oh. I have a number of friends that work from home and they love it.
This is NOT going to go over well for those working for IBM, I’m thinking.

Stupid.
When HP ends this I’ll be interested to understand why...

That’s a shame.
I do LOT of work from home and I am way more productive. Get up, and my desk is 15 steps away.
I am working AS I am making coffee. The trick is to still shower and get prepared just like if you have to drive in- because you might have to.
Then you get to your desk and get organized before anyone is even in the office. And I am usually the first one online ready with questions (and answers) before other people come online.

It seems odd that IBM even exists anymore. They don't make any "Business Machines" like they used to make.
Many moons ago I passed on an opportunity to work for them because they wanted to choke me every day with a tie. That was the same period of time when they were actually something special.

They probably have few people abusing the system so instead of cracking down on the slackers they are going to take the cowardly way out and end it.

Ginni Rometty is NOT held in high regard at IBM.
Reminds me of how they felt about Carly Forina at HP.
Only hired for gender and not for skills.
IBM is already building a track record of stabbing people in the back to meet $$$ targets.
This is NOT going to help them.

Companies have every right to make stupid decisions. If the motive is to get people to quit there is no penalty for lying.

I work from home (in a way) and put in many more hours than I would if trapped in an office.
IBM is a conventional company struggling to finds its way in an unconventional world.
Time to buy puts on IBM.
To: RoosterRedux
Good. Work from home simply means lazy employees not willing to so much as go to an office. Remote communications is a joke and extremely ineffective. The individual might think they get more done at home but no one else does.

And that is probably the real reason. Everyone has to be treated equally. And who might the slackers be?

They have a lot of patents. That can keep you going a long time.

They probably know who they are but dare not offend some lesbian, left handed, purple hair LBGT types. So they penalize everyone.

So, I suppose that means they employ mostly lawyers and engineers to act as expert witnesses. That sounds so boring.
