I’m not sure exactly how it would ever be done, but I think there have been calls for a referendum when the Queen dies.
With Prince William and Kate being very popular and with young children that the nation seems to adore I would imagine that the institution would survive such a referendum. Prior to that, when all they had to look forward to was Charles, well, might have been sketchy.
