If everything goes wrong if because of disaster, climate change, or nuclear war, life as we know it comes to an end, with parts of the earth rendered inhospitable with widespread environmental devastation the Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a resource that could come to our rescue.
Hidden about 400 feet inside a mountain on a remote island between mainland Norway and the North Pole, the vault stores valuable seeds from crops all over the world. It's supposed to be protected and stay at a safe temperature to store all those seeds.
But extreme temperatures in the Arctic this winter combined with heavy rain instead of snow led to melting permafrost that gushed into the tunnel leading into the vault, according to a report in The Guardian, raising questions about whether the doomsday vault will survive a warming planet.
"It was not in our plans to think that the permafrost would not be there and that it would experience extreme weather like that," Hege Njaa Aschim, an official in the Norweigan government, which controls the vault, told The Guardian. "A lot of water went into the start of the tunnel and then it froze to ice, so it was like a glacier when you went in."
The water didn't travel all the way down into the vault, which is still safe, and officials could chip all the ice out the entryway.
Here's what the vault looks like inside and why administrators are worried about the potentially devastating effects of climate change.

Stopped reading at the fraudulent words “climate change”.
Their wealth of ignorance astounds me
Oh, climate change is very real.
MAN-CAUSED large-scale temperature changes justifying governmental control schemes, not so much.
Actually, I think it is an interesting challenge to design mega-structures around the climate changes that are going to inevitably happen over the next 20,000 years.
That’s pretty much what I came away with also.
Good grief!
They placed all these seeds in a place that could be jeopardized by the climate change they are certain is taking place.
How bright was that?
Also, just how firm are their beliefs, if they actually did this?
Oh, well. Good luck with that.
There are many networks of heirloom seed-saving.
I wasn’t aware of that, but this is a timely moment to let that be known.
why chip away at the ice?
wait til next year when it will melt.
then think: “sump pump”
Maybe hire an Engineer next time. Seedy humans don’t always think things through.
And if they overlooked basic safeguards like that, I’m sure they have no plan for an asteroid, neutron stars or other dangers floating around us.
We many not believe in climate change as anthropogenic. I’ve found it difficult to believe that a couple hundred years of industrialization could possibly do the damage to this resilient Earth that some are suggesting, and believe that the current hoopla is largely a politically- and ideologically-driven method of economic redistribution. But, still: Stuff Happens, and CAN happen.
Seed saving is one of the things I’ve been interested in as a retirement ‘job’.

There is nothing fraudulent about climate change. Climate has been changing since the dawn of time.
What is fraudulent is AGW or man-made climate change.
After the X-rays, all the seeds are genetically modified.
Maybe some thirty foot grasshoppers too.
Thanks for the mention and links.
When it comes to seeds, my biggest concern is not global warming. It’s seed companies that genetically engineer seeds that do not produce viable seed plants and are cannibalistic, for lack of a better term.
These genetically engineered seeds grow to be large plants, whose seeds are not viable, that are then cross-pollinated with plants that are not genetically engineered, but then take on the characteristics of the engineered seed plants.
Then the seed manufacturers try to claim their proprietary seeds have been ripped off. Not true.
What we could wind up with eventually is a devastated food crop that can’t reproduce. Then what happens when something cataclysmic does happen, and our food is gone?
Seeds that produce plants that are not fertile, should be banned.
The rediculousness of the story aside, this seed cache was probably started so that the elite can survive once the hoi polloi have been exterminated in a war of the elite’s making.
This is why I believe that grassroots efforts at seed saving, especially of heirlooms, is very important.
But they made sure it was pretty!
The rooftop and part of the facade of the building are a work of art with a light installation by Dyveke Sanne, since all public buildings in Norway are required by law to have art.
2 thoughts come to mind...
1- Why not ask Monsanto for a bunch of seeds? Aren’t they good enough?
2- They probably put the bank there because (so I heard) when Planet X hits the earth, the earth will rotate down and the poles will be in the tropics/temperate zone, so it’ll be handy to have the seeds right there.
