In fathoming the failure of Europeans to protect their own interests against the onslaught of Islamic jihadism, one is reminded of Ayn Rand's quotation that "[r]eason is not automatic. Those who deny it cannot be conquered by it. Do not count on them[.]"
Bruce Bawer, an astute observer of the European scene, wonders how "Marine Le Pen lost in a landslide" given all the jihadist assaults against the French people and the very culture of France. Bawer offers three possibilities that include:
European guilt about past imperial histories and a "need to atone."
the postmodern belief that "no culture is better than any other – and it's racist to say otherwise."
the influence of the mainstream media, which routinely "soft pedals the Islamic roots of terror"
the fact that "some people don't want to learn the truth"

Europeans have to atone? For what? Being descended from the most bloodthirsty, rapacious, conniving and ruthless pirates the world has ever known? Islam should beware, lest they awaken this slumbering giant that is in the heart of every descendant of these barbarians of Nordic origin.

The biggest failing of The Right is assuming reason alone will persuade others.
That is not just a failing of the right.
That is a failing common to most civilians across all spectrums.

Europeans descended from ruthless pirates. All civilizations could be of similar descendant lineage. The Aztecs were probably worse. Western Europe has been turned numb by the stupidity of socialism. Look at the soccer hooligans of London. The new Mayor of London is a Moslem. The soccer hooligans are not going to do anything. Same thing with Germany and all the other nations of western Europe. Socialism has destroyed their will to live. They are numb to the values of the U.S. Constitution. Oh Wait. They never had the U.S. Constitution to begin with. Europe will not rise up to defend itself.

It’s not puzzling at all, and it’s not capitulation but alliance. The media is the left. Both the left and Islam see the current dominant judeo-christian culture as their number one enemy and so they are temporary allies in their fight to destroy it - it’s the enemy of my enemy effect.
Once they achieve their goal, then they’ll turn on each other. The outcome of that fight is not at all certain. It’s similar to the US and the Soviets being allies in WWII against their common enemy the nazis. Once the nazis were done they turned on each other.
And Hadrian’s Wall went up because even the Roman’s had a limit as to what they’d pay for conquest.
