Deal on Government Funding Reached, Averting Shutdown; No Funding for the Wall
NBC News ^ | 05/01/2017 | by LEIGH ANN CALDWELL, KASIE HUNT and FRANK THORP V

A deal has been reached on a $1 trillion-plus bill to fund the government for the final five months of this fiscal year, an agreement that is likely to avert a government shutdown.

Congressional negotiators had been working through the weekend to hash out the last remaining complications in a bill to fund the government before the agreement was announced Sunday night.

After President Donald Trump backed down on funding for the construction of a border wall, some additional sticking points remained, including health benefits for coal miners, funding for Puerto Rico and an additional $30 billion for defense, delaying congressional negotiators and causing them to miss their deadline of last Friday. Congress passed and Trump signed into law a one-week extension to keep the government open and give negotiators more time.

The newly reached deal includes an additional $15 billion in defense spending, less than what Trump asked for, but still $25 billion more than last year's spending. It also includes a permanent fix to fund coal miners' health care instead of a temporary extension.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of New York called the deal "a good agreement for the American people" that "takes the threat of a government shutdown off the table."

"The bill ensures taxpayer dollars aren't used to fund an ineffective border wall, excludes poison pill riders and increases investments in programs that the middle-class relies on, like medical research, education and infrastructure," Schumer said Sunday night.

"Early on in this debate, Democrats clearly laid out our principles," he said. "At the end of the day, this is an agreement that reflects those principles."

The worst part is that the wall wouldn’t actually be that expensive, and it would save money in the long run.

Even the high estimates peg the cost around $22 billion. Meanwhile, illegal immigrants cost us $150 A YEAR, every year.

This thing needs to be built, come hell or high water.

No, we don't need to get rid of Trump...but he *does* need to realize the optics.

By saying that, btw, you are nearly stealing the thunder on my vanity. One line synopsis coming by PM.

RE: No... as in getting millions of people to elect him President. It would not have been remotely possible with Cruz.

Well, what’s there to complain?

People don’t vote for Cruz and then in a thread that has NOTHING to do with Cruz, start bashing him for not exercising leadership when he is not even in that position.

The issue at hand is what is happening NOW. With Trump as our leader.

The fact is Cruz has been nothing but supportive of Trump , yet, what do people do? They still bash him.

Just so you know, I do give Cruz credit for coming on board. He seems to be one of the few Senators who doesn’t seem to be actually working for the other side. It doesn’t mean I like the guy, but he HAS gone a long way to making up for his behavior during the campaign (specifically, his speech at the convention) - which is a LOT more than I can say for some of those other losers.

LOL. Another concern troll. If we are having this same conversation a year from now, I will join you. Until then, I'm with Trump who has already delivered on many of his promises.

Gee, you’d think we were the minority party our something. If Trump and the Republicans continue to cave even though they’re in power, it will be one and done for all of them. This was our last shot at saving the country. If they continue to disappoint, my last ballot ever will have been cast November 8th.

Well, they can’t do anything in the GOP Congress until they have 60 GOP Senators. That will be their next excuse.

EPA - more funding

NEA/NPR - fully funded

Obamacare - fully funded

Sanctuary Cities - fully funded

DACA - fully funded

Planned Parenthood - fully funded

Border Wall - no funds

Military - small increase

Shuemer and Pelosi won. Trump, McConnell, Ryan, and the American people LOST. Guess that voting thingy doesn’t matter after all.

Rush talked at length on this. I am disgusted and not sure why Trump would not veto this and create the stink and flush the varmints (R and D) out into the open.

I don’t think it is just K-street, cheap labor and campaign donation threats to the losers like Rob Portman and other loser wimpy republicans.

I also think and believe Obama’s NSA has info on these guys and has them blackmailed - kiddie porn, pedophilia, cheating on wives, bribes, illegal donations and such.

PRAY HARDER!!!

I wish Trump had the courage to just veto and let the chips fall where they may.
