North Korea's army: 1.2M men, obsolete equipment and nukes

North Korea’s military may be armed with obsolete conventional weapons, but at 1.2 million men, it poses a very real threat to its neighbor and nemisis to the south.

Equipped with 20,000 artillery pieces, 1,000 short- and medium-range missiles, 70 submarines, more than 400 patrol/missile boats and 563 combat aircraft, the Hermit Kingdom's forces are poised to do maximum damage in a sneak attack against South Korea.

I remember hearing similar things from people in my unit back before the invasion of Iraq. I remember hearing about “easy combat pay” and “just like desert storm”. I was against that invasion. I’m not in favor of this one either. I worry more about the likes of Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, and Nancy Pelosi than Kim Jong-un. They all made out pretty well after Iraq.

Good time to take profits and wait till this blows over. Markets will take a huge beating if anything serious happens.

Just firing one ID’s its position, but odds are we know their positions.

We’re talking about a nation in almost total darkness at night as viewed from satellites due to a lack of infrastructure and technology. In addition, these morons keep wasting what little resources they have in what apparently are shows of force which turn into shows of farce.

It’s ironic that NK has predicated its militaristic culture on standing up to the big bad US despite any lack of real threat. They’ve had the needle pegged on all-out war for so long they have nowhere to go on the alert scale.

This a nation in perpetual famine. Joining the military is one of the few ways to get access to food so any total of men under arms is specious at best. Their ‘loyalty’ is mostly due to fear, threat, paranoia, etc. Half of them may well surrender immediately especially if it means freedom for their families.

Nobody is asking what the morale of the 1.2 million men is like? My guess is that 1,999,999 of them would defect as soon as they reached Seoul.

With the US alongside it would be a bloodbath

I believe it would be a bloodbath of Biblical proportions, so bad that it would cause world outrage if we fully turned loose on them. Lightly armed men on the ground are lunch meat against American air power.

As I recall the Gulf War, the primary problem was securing all the Iraqi deserters that simply gave up.

I can visualize that being a problem in North Korea

They hide their stuff under hills and mountains.

Might need some MOAB’s to take out some of the artillery.

We have the firepower to light up the DMZ, the hoards can’t be effective, if they can’t cross the wasteland.

Yep. Korea was getting its butt handed to it last time around. That’s when China entered.

The attack would begin just b4 midnight. No lights in the north. 6-8 hours b4 they know where to aim.

MOAB useless until air is cleared of opponent. Dropped from transport plane.

First , knock out their 2 satellites. We don’t know what is in those satellites, may be an EMP ‘device’. Have directed beam weapons, anti- missile assets off the coast ready to jump on launches.
The subs are worrisome, real worrisome.

Ideal weapon for the hoards, neutron bomb, which is said we don’t posses anymore.

There’s more. If the Norks attack we will have to let them do enough damage to show the world that we’re not the cause of it. This means the counter attack will be more costly. Don’t forget our 28k troops there compare to the norths’ 1.2 million makes our troops nothing more than a trip wire.

The biggest fear out of all of this crisis is are the innocents in South Korea and our soldiers on the border. They will be the first casualties in any conflict. Then will come the storm of refugees if they don't die from starvation after taking 10 steps. I cannot imagine any humanitarian approach to saving these people if this goes South. It's going to be a mess if we dismantle the nork government and the casualties will be unavoidable.

Not so worried about the Chinese border. They'll probably just shoot anyone soldier or refugee.

At least the left will see the full potential of their policies on display when the horrors of nork land are exposed.

Since so much of the Nork’s artillery is rail based I would imagine that bombing those lines would put a damper on their mobility.

Most of their artillery is in underground dug outs from what I understand. They have a of of tunnels with artillery stored in them. The only thing they do right is artillery.
