The North Carolina House of Representatives approved legislation in a lopsided 67-48 vote Thursday that would shield drivers from civil liability if they collide with protesters.
Opponents say the legislation is unnecessary and may give drivers the false impression they can maliciously run over activists. One Democrat warned it would make the state the butt of jokes about being full of “dumb rednecks.”
But Republican proponents, who sent the measure to the state Senate by a veto-proof margin, say recent encounters between activists and drivers makes the reform both sensible and necessary.

I have been in a situation in Jacksonville FL that required me to stomp the accelerator and damn whoever stayed in the way. It wasn’t a demonstration. It was the result of turning off the highway at the wrong intersection after midnight. I had a revolver on the seat beside me but the accelerator seemed to me to be a safer tactic. The folks got out of the way and someone threw a bottle at me as I went on by.
Most rednecks I know are far from dumb. Most of the democrats I know are the epitome of stupidity.

I like the idea of being able to drive my way out of a crowd that has surrounded me, so that I’m not trapped inside a mob that can set my car on fire and trap me.
I’ve been trapped in a mob with my children in the car, and it was terrifying. Yet if I drove over those blocking me, I would have been at risk for charges.
Charges be damned!
If a “mob” surrounds my car, with or without my children present; many in that “mob” will die.
As I understand things, trying to prevent someone from moving about freely (like blocking traffic) is on par with kidnapping, and a lethal response is warranted. Can any legal experts out there clarify this?
