How the mighty have fallen!
The biblical lament has particular relevance this week, as Bill OReillytrusted by millions of Americans every weeknight since 1996 on his spin-stopping Fox News program The OReilly Factorwill not return to the network following an exposé of alleged sexual harassment incidents over the past decade.
The announcement follows other high-profile departures from the nations top cable news network in recent months. Notably, prime-time anchor Megyn Kelly will soon debut as a news commentator for NBC Newsfollowing her lead role in last summers resignation by Fox News president and founder Roger Ailes, who was forced out by sexual misconduct charges similar to those facing OReilly.
Its a confusing moment for many Americans. Without doubt, loyal viewers of Fox News played an outsized role in the historic election of President Donald Trump. Many are now evaluating his administrations first 100 days, enumerating what accomplishments to trumpet in defense of their electoral choice while grappling with the former reality TV stars limitations as a statesman.
Without OReilly to look out for the folks (as he often stated was his driving factor), the 24/7 fair and balanced coverage suddenly seems less reliable to help cable TV viewers in this evaluative process. What will the networks future hold? The answer will surely take cues from its past, including the unprecedented events of 2016.
The easy route for conservatives would be to dismiss the upheaval at Fox Newslong anchored by OReilly, perched atop the ratings behemothas another mainstream media plot, a coordinated effort to take down what many on the right consider the only truth serum in news media. That perspective has factual elements, but its not the entire story.
Those who welcome even some of how Fox News has changed the national media landscape should think critically about recent events and what knowledgeable critics are saying. In the Unresolved Problem segment tonight, here are five reasons why trust in Fox News has eroded over the past year.
1. Cozy Relationship with Trump Campaign Bordering on Promotion
Back in 2011, Fox and Friends began an unusual feature for a morning variety show every week, New York real estate mogul Donald Trump would call-in and banter with hosts regarding the news of the day. As reported by New York magazine, this segment came about as a favor from Roger Ailes to Trump.
Fast forward to spring 2016, when the Republican field was still large. Coverage of Senators Cruz and Rubio was drowned out on Fox News and its competition, while unpredictable yet camera-ready candidate Trump seemed to get wall-to-wall attention.
During frequent on-air interviews, Bill OReilly and Sean Hannity offered Trump friendly deference delivered with a collegial tone. Why are we successful? Whats the reason? Part of the reason is people like me, Hannity said in an interview last October with the New York Times, questioned about his support of Trump. This is the spice! Were getting back to the spicy part of the network, the one that pays the bills.
The eventful, at times bumpy, relationship between Fox News and Donald Trump in recent years is too lengthy to fully recount here. But its climax is unmistakable, when President Trump became leader of the free world roughly 100 days ago.

You sir are not a good conservative and I seriously doubt your even a good Christian. I have not read such biased anti-conservative opinionated tripe since I last read a story by NPR. Maybe you should watch FOX news for a change. I supported Ted Cruz and he had as much air time on FOX as Trump did. I doubt seriously you even watch Fox.
I have my problems with FOX news, but they have more conservatives than the rest of the network and cable news shows who all worship at the alter of socialism. Yet your assessment of the problems are not the problems, you attack FOX for not being moderate enough, or not having enough liberals. God knows we do NOT need more moderate mugwamps slapping each other on the backs as they ignore the truth, and trash the American way.
As part of your hatred for FOX is that the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York is investigating FOX and their sexual harassment troubles. Well gee, it began under Obama and we all know what the US Attorney Generals office was like under him don't we. You come off like a clueless liberal. O'Reilly denies the accusations as does Hannity who also is being targeted. Fox settled, not O'Reilly. If you knew what you were talking about you would know that there is a concerted effort to bring FOX down. Not just FOX, but conservative talk hosts and Christian ones as well. Oh you lean into the truth a bit, but it's all overshadowed by your leftists hatred for FOX.
By the way, if you think Williams is a logical journalist, I'm sorry, he supports and defends some of the most leftist stances one can imagine. Sorry, any one who claims to be a Christian but supports abortion is not a logical individual. Especially when leftists like Williams who claims to be a conservative says things like, "I am against abortion, but who am I to stop others from murdering babies?". Just one of the millions of things wrong with Williams thinking.
As for Playing Up Politics as Entertainment, excuse me? I want conservatives to take Liberals to task and they are not gotcha moments, they are moments of revealing what a leftist is all about. Allowing leftists to get away with their lies is not what journalism is all about. Journalism is catching and exposing the lies that people propagate as truth. Jesus used the gotcha trick quite often. If you think not, then maybe you should read how he treated those who wanted to stone the woman caught in adultery.
One last comment. The race issue, it was fabricated by the left. While there are shootings that are wrong, more white men have been shot and killed by the police than black men. The protests over the blacks shot were thugs, a few weren't, but by and large the most were. To defend the anger over the shootings, and accuse FOX contributors and pundits for lacking compassion id pure unadulterated hog wash. The left defended thugs and attacked police. So much so that innocent officers are still being assassinated for a lie. You defend that which is indefensible. Shame on you for defending the lies propagated by the race-baiting socialist misfits that only wish to tear down this country. And you call your self a conservative Christian?
Wow, I think you need to open your eyes to the problem in this country, and it begins with so-called conservatives like you.
They lost me at:
“Cozy Relationship with Trump Campaign Bordering on Promotion.”

I have to agree with you on that. No mention of the msm helping Hillary at every turn.
I didn’t even read the article. Knew right away that it was gonna just make me angry.
Great reply.
I haven’t seen fox as conservative for a long time, save a few folks.
But at least they weren’t out and out left wing like the rest of the crap out there.
I mostly stopped watching cause there is always too much arguing :)
There is nothing anymore that has any sense or honesty or worth listening to. I had Fox on this evening and turned it off... didn’t hear the new shows... tried to.. but nothing worth filling my mind with their trash. I just posted a long comment on another article from earlier this evening.. Tired of all the promises and seeing nothing change. I am beginning to use past tense with Trump.. and that hurts! I want him to change Washington and it isn’t happening! they are getting the best of the days even yet... they use every trick and unlawful means.. and nothing stops them. Trump has to be more assertive and get that fight back. There is no time to lose!
We stopped watching FOX back in 2007 but everytime I see a clip of Shemp Smith or back when Meghan Kelly was on it was all hate Trump all the time what have you been smoking charlie? cripes...
BOR made the mistake that trying to do “middle of the road” only gets you run over
Who watched Smith???? I do not know anyone who watches him, or most shows on the weekend for that matter.
We watch what made FOX number one, the shows like Hannity, and Tucker, and others that are very conservative.
What is saving Fox’s program “The Five”, now moved to after Tucker Carlson in Prime Time, is the addition of Jesse Watters to their Five lineup as a co-host; otherwise it would be a lost cause. I REALLY like Watters, and think he will influence the commentary of the others on this program, to the positive.
He didn’t get attacked for being a moderate though, he got attacked because he was actually doing a great job of attacking the left for a change.
I agree, but there are others doing a good job like Eric Boling who I think should have been given the the hour they gave the five, although I like Waters and Gutfeld and Matt Baer.
What gets me is the same kind of crap is probably going on with the other networks, this behavior isn’t a Fox monopoly. The Democrat controlled press would never let this kind of behavior leak out and make it front page news. If I was a billionaire I’d tell O’ Reilly, lets get a TV Network of our own and call it TND aka True News Daily. Hire the best investigator reporters and commentators we can find, there has to be some fresh blood out there. We can also draw in some of the Fox female staff that wasn’t harassed by him. I would rather start fresh.
“year”???
Fox went to hell long ago.

Good, or should I keep looking?
“The Five” literally SUCKS big time! Done with Fox!
Who really wrote this - or had it written for them?
Nancy Pelosi?
Schmucky Schumer?
Rachel Madcow?
The Clinton Foundation?
Me too. Bulsh**. “Christian?” My ***. Why propagate this trash here?
To show how some Christian sites are clueless about who claims to be a Christian.
So now you know to ignore them
My feelings as well.
Well, if they keep putting “the 5” on in prime time they won’t be the nations top cable news network for long. That show’s unwatchable.
That’s the worst programming mistake Fox has ever made. What the hell are they thinking?
