Border Wall: President Trump just had his bluff called — again
Washington Post ^ | 04/25/2017 | Aaron Blake

For the second time in two major legislative battles, the Trump White House has issued an ultimatum — only to back down.

In the health care debate, the president was going to force a House vote on the package and dare skeptical Republicans to vote against replacing Obamacare, before abandoning that plan in the face of defeat.

And now, in the government funding debate, he's backing off his previous demand that Congress approve funding for his border wall. As The Washington Post's Philip Rucker, Robert Costa and David Weigel report:

But with a Friday deadline looming to pass a new spending bill, the Trump administration projected confidence that a shutdown would be avoided. In the face of fierce Democratic opposition to funding the wall’s construction, White House officials signaled Monday that the president may be open to an agreement that includes money for border security if not specifically for a wall, with an emphasis on technology and border agents rather than a structure.

Trump showed even more flexibility Monday afternoon, telling conservative journalists in a private meeting that he was open to delaying funding for wall construction until September, a White House official confirmed.

The wall, of course, was the biggest applause line for Trump throughout his campaign — often taking the form of a call-and-response with his approving crowds. And given how divisive it is, inserting it into must-pass legislation like a government funding bill seemed to be the best way to get what Trump wants.

That's what the White House tried. Office of Management and Budget Chairman Mick Mulvaney said last week that any government-funding bill must include funding for the border wall. Throughout the weekend, top White House aides including Mulvaney suggested Trump might veto a spending bill that doesn't fund his border wall.

No one is more angry and frustrated than I am. It’s long past time to kick ass. But A:Trump is the man in the hots seat and B: He’s STILL the quadruple down badass who ran for president. Much as I want him to grab someone, ANYONE by the back of the neck and smash their rotten fecking face on the street, 100 days ain’t shyte at the level T is now playing. Give him 2 years minimum, and even that is being a bit pissy and impatient.

I think “Lock her up” was the biggest applause line followed by the wall.

The wall is a total scam at this point, it will never be built. (It will be built when ocare is repealed.)

A few more such scams and Trump’s base will collapse like a child’s sand castle at high tide.

This could work fine for us conservatives who see the wall as a waste of money. The budget cuts to EPA, etc have been ignored by the Left while they fought the shift of that money to the WALL.

For some of us, the best world is cuts to EPA, etc and no money spent on the WALL. cut, cut, cut.

One thing about Trump is that he doesn’t like to lose.

He will get used to it, we have.

Schumer absolutely failed in his struggle to be the big boss of the party.

Yeah they threw him off the team right?

That was all for show to his base he knew he couldn't stop it, so why did he force the rule change, huh?

He forced the rule change because 2018 is just down the road.

The USA is a sovereign nation and it’s their duty to protect and defend it, and its laws.

If Trump wanted to impress the base he would have ignored those judges and forced them to take it to the Supremes, I doubt they would but in the mean time the terrorists keep on coming in.

Most of Rush's callers today wanted Trump to shut it down and call the establishment bluff or else.

People here think all the good stuff he overturned with EOs will placate the base, it won't because they probably don't even know they happened. But they will know if Ryano get his way on ObamaCare and the Wall and they won't like it. Many of Trumps votes were not so much for him but against the establishment, so making nice with those scum will not go down well with them.

I have no doubt the wall will be built, but it may not be fast enough for some people.

It is not even about the wall, it is about Ryano and his ilk standing the President down on the issue, don't you get it?

Sorry that 4 months in every campaign promise hasn’t been filled.

It is not every campaign promise it is two. The two top ones he ran on. The FOX was running a propaganda session tonight showing that the voters don't care about the wall anymore.

“I’m not impatient. I just like promises that are made kept. Including the promised timetable.”

Grow up will ya!! ...you sound like the wacko liberals out in the streets and you’re playing right into the hands of the MSM and their phony narrative. You want to do something constructive instead of whining like a 3 year old, call your Reps and Senators.

Being around here for the last 2 years has given me some surprises....how similar all you tough, I demand it now types are to the spoiled, screaming snowflakes on the left. You deserve each other.

All 12 of you. Cutting taxes does not impress a man that has no job and Conservatives never seem to grasp that fact. Not getting funding for the wall this budget pushes it to next year and there will be elections which likely will give us a democrat congress if Ryan keeps shanking the President. It is all about perceptions if it wasn't then Ryan would have stuck some chump change in the budget. The assumption now is he has bent the President to his will that is what people are upset about right now but that anger will bleed over into a lot of other issues and an election will be held before any of those are solved.

Forget 4D chess and start some bare knuckles tactics.

A most accurate analysis, Max. FR is infested with professional whiners who sit in front of their computer screens 24/7 and cry like little girls.

As I recall, candidate Trump said very loudly over and over and over.......Mexico will pay for the wall

Thus, there is no need for the congress to provide money. Trump will get it from Mexico.

I think Trump needs to pivot and stop these federal “judges” that just throw out unconstitutional declarations. Push for Cruz’s funding plans and RICO drug gangs. Fiercley punish companies that hire illegal aliens and use that money too. If that jerk Obama can take billions in fines to give to his La Raza and ACORN goons through executive actions Trump can fund wall construction.

Trump will get it from Mexico.

He has to deliver it before they pay.

There are so many ways that Mexico can pay for the wall it is just silly to discuss it.

And you're calling promises made a phony narrative? Again. I didn't make the promise(s) with the first days promise tied to them.

I just don't understand why you would never give Paul Ryan or most other house members the same latitude you give the President. Or for that matter if a dem wasn't delivering on their promises made, most on FR would be all over them. No grow up chiding to those who make those observation.

If Trump is as big of boy as everyone is claiming, he doesn't need a group of people scared the media may be right a time or two.
