At this rate, the United States is going to need immigrants of all kinds to continue growth.
A new Census Bureau study has just reported a sobering commentary on the current generation of young people.
There are now more young people living with their parents than in any other arrangement…What is more, almost 9 in 10 young people who were living in their parents home a year ago are still living there today, making it the most stable living arrangement.
It’s a factor largely of the economy, but also social mores and trends. The traditional lifetime pattern, you may recall, was for young people to leave their parents’ home for college or shortly after. After graduation, they got a job, set up their own accommodation and the usual courtship routine began. All this in their 20s.
Now, the Census reports, that process has largely been pushed into the 30s. Most still marry, but later, reducing the window for children in families.
But today the primary living arrangement between the ages of 18 and 34 is to live, spouseless, back in their parents’ home. That’s almost 23 million Americans, three million more than residing with a spouse.
And this has all happened rather quickly, as demographic changes go. As late as 2005, a majority of these young people lived independently in their own household, the dominant living arrangement in 35 states. Ten years later that was the case in only six states.
The states with the highest percentage of re-filled empty nests are concentrated on the coasts, while states with the lower percentages are in Mountain and Midwestern states.
Of those living with Mom and Dad, one-in-four is unemployed or not attending school. This mirrors a decline in the economic status of young men. In 1975, Census points out, only 25% of males between 25 and 34 earned less than $30,000 a year. Last year that percentage was a whopping 41%.
All of which is ominous economically in part because of the student debt situation. Not only have those with college loans grown from 17% in 1989 to 41% in 2013, but the size of the debts has nearly tripled.
Young people are still marrying at roughly the same rate, but older. Surveys show the ideal age most Americans consider for marriage is 25 with the young people graduated and supporting themselves. But today only 24% are married by then.
About 20 years ago women had a 59% chance of marriage by age 25. By 2010, that was down to 44%. Yet the percentage actually married by age 40 changed little, from 86% to 84%. All of this can delay having children, and reduce the number likely.
However, the Census study also revealed a stunning statistic that usually presages poverty: “Parenthood now precedes marriage for many women. Nearly 40% of all births in the United States are to unmarried women.”
Its all Obama’s fault, 94 million out of the labor force, highest poverty rate in decades, most illegals in country, H1b visas while millions of IT grads don’t get jobs so multinationals fake that qualified Americans don’t exist.
Truth is Americans must train their replacements when they are laid off so companies can trim their salary checks.
Trump is changing this, but congress is still in the bag for the Chamber of Commerce, and the wall is the only way to stop drugs and cheap illegal labor coming here.
Yes. Family is family. We have room in our basement for a futon, etc. And they have their rooms.
I would love to have my 21 year old son and soon-to-be 18 year old daughter stay with us while they save up money, etc. Hubby and I are already paying our son’s college tuition so he’s not burdened with debt like I was.
Schools here are cheaper, though.
Want enough children? Restore the patriarchy. Once a civilization embraces feminism population declines increases to the point that either women’s lib is removed or the civilization is conqored by a more patarchal group of people.
“immigrants of all kinds” ....
********************************************
Immigrants are not the solution, especially allowing illegal immigration - article didn’t say ‘illegal’, but I bet if you asked them to specify, they’d include it. MAGA will go a long way to solving the problems in this article, but it’s going to take a while to turn around what was Obama’s 8 year “destroy America” program. Jobs won’t solve the problem of useless degrees and 40% of births to unmarried women. Technical schools where true skills are learned & kids being taught morals/values by their parents will help with the rest of it. Since the Left tends to be godless & socialist/communist, you’re still going to have significant culture problems especially if you let the Left indoctrinate (not educate) the kids in the public school system & higher ‘education’ & they have greatly infiltrated, if not taken over, both (it’s a plan, not a bug). If I had school-age kids in today’s environment, they’d be home schooled, regardless of the sacrifices it took to do it.
bkmk
I guess they want to breed foreign welfare cases to save the country.
It goes beyond that; the liberal bastions have the highest costs of living, and in the past workers there commended the highest salaries (so they were targeted for replacement by Asian coolies). Costs have not decreased to reflect this new reality; McJobs don’t pay enough for young people to get started on their own.
Marriage is a different question altogether; there are simply too many reasons (legal and financial) for young men in particular to avoid it.
The photo is a classic depiction of exactly what is happening; it could pass for the worker bee hives used by our imported Asian white collar workers - and that is no coincidence. Our standard of living is falling to meet the rising standard of Asia’s growing middle class; we just haven’t reached a balance yet.
I’ve posted on other threads that we’ve moved to an economic model where people will work their arses off with no hope of retirement, renting homes and cars, and they’ll die with the clothes on their back and a mountain of debt from trying to attain our former standard of living.
Have children late and then die early.
Gee, this problem has been ballooning over the last decade. I wonder what could have possibly been going on politically while this was happening?
While the left wonders why we elected Trump instead of their anointed hag, the big irony is that those most affected by the kids unable to leave home are living in the areas that are more typically leftist strongholds. I wonder if some of these people will ever realize the link between the predominate political climate and their kids’ inability to become independent?
Disclaimer: my son is one of the kids this article discusses. I would love for him to become independent.
They are still living at home because parents aren’t as strict as they used to be. When I was 17, I joined the Marines and counted the days until boot camp where I would finally be out from under my parents. Yes, I preferred drill instructors to my parents! Never went back to them either. After my enlistment, I worked two jobs and found a way to pay my own rent. Relationship with my parents much improved and they treated me as their equals thereafter.
I still see 30 something men today living with their parents slouching around the house going “yes mom” and “yes dad.” Pathetic.
That illustrates perfectly why it is unhealthy for adult children to live with their parents. They should be heading their own households under their own rules.
Just wondering aloud.
Given the current rate, you get an overwhelming elderly and disabled population dumped on you, get stuck in deficit spending, and so on, so no, it is not good.
After 90 days it’s the parents fault.
I don't wanna grow up, I'm a democrat kid,
I don't have to work and there's xBox to play with.
I don't wanna grow up, I'm a democrat kid,
Got free health insurance, maybe I'll have a kid
I'm infantile and clueless,
I'm the biggest joke there is.
I don't wanna grow up, cause if I did
I wouldn't be a democrat kid.
The snowflakes have been brainwashed into the “you must go to college to get a good job” mindset.
Today’s colleges aren’t like colleges in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. They’re coming out with very limited skills and knowledge.
Kids who graduated high school, joined the military, or went to a trade school, are busy making money, inventing things, and living in their own homes. They learned about the real world, not some philosophical utopia.
As Trump revives the economy, this problem will recede. We’ve had 8 years in which there are no jobs. And the jobs that did get created were taken by illegal immigrants and foreigners abusing our visa system.
I am not going to read the rest of this. Pure globalist propaganda from the get go.
With all these snowflakes how can there be global warming?
