Russia's Supreme Court has accepted the government's request to designate Jehovah's Witnesses as an outlawed religious group, deeming it to be an extremist organisation.
The justice ministry argued that the group had distributed pamphlets which incited hatred against other groups.
Lawyers representing the group reject the claims and say they will appeal.
The denomination says it has 175,000 members in Russia - a country where it was persecuted during the Stalin era.
An estimated eight million people worldwide are part of the Christian-based movement, best known for going door-to-door looking for new converts.

But they’ll accept murdering muslims as much a religious group as the JW’s, maybe less. Makes no sense.

Romney will have a little talk with Vlad to protect the Mormons. Or maybe little Jason has been called to serve....
Q: What do you get when you cross a Jehovahs Witness with a Unitarian Universalist?
A: Someone who will knock on your door, but they cant tell you why
Alternate answer: The Avon Lady
The Russians don’t like them because they are pacifists; they won’t go fight for Vlad & the Motherland (in that order).
Our constitution is a unique document to be treasured
I am no fan of the JW cult. That said I have no desire to outlaw them
Yes they were along with many sects the party didn’t agree with
I wonder if any of the Putinistas here will claim that he is just protecting Christianity
What’s so wrong with that?
I tell the JW’s that my bottom line is:
1. I’m going to drink coffee in the morning and beer in the evening
2. I want birthday and Christmas presents
3. I am not wearing a suit on Sunday
4. I believe there are countries that should have their asses kicked because they are bad
If they can work with that, fine. Otherwise, we don’t really have much to talk about.
All I have ever seen from them is respectful and dedicated people trying in their way to serve the Lord.
Russia is not at all open to Christian denominations, except for the "official" Russian Orthodox Church, which openly supports the Putin regime. Other denominations, especially Evangelical churches, are persecuted.
I guess three different crews hitting Putin’s door on the same day was one too many.
That always makes me laugh...
The Nazi’s, under Hitler, executed lots of Jehovah’s Witnesses, so Russians banning them isn’t a real surprise.
They may be nice to outsiders but they are definitely not nice to family members.
They are a cult, believe me.
Here here.
Russia will have a national identity forever.
I wish we could say the same...
Watch Russian Ballet on YouTube.
A couple of months ago they came knocking on my door and talked about the nastiness in the Middle East and got kind of mushy about it.
I asked them if they had ever read the Koran?
Answer: No
I said read Sura 2-9 and come back and we will talk.
They said they would, ain't seen them lately.
A local ordinance against door-to-door solicitation is all that’s necessary to tamp down the JWs.
I know that they can be very domineering with the male authority of the household. And strict disciplinarians. Maybe not “nice,” but severe.
