This evening, all eyes were on the special election in Georgias Sixth Congressional District as Democrats were hoping to flip the seat that has been held by Republicans for decades. The seat recently opened up after Republican Tom Price left to take over as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Going into the night, Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff was way up in the polls as a number of GOP hopefuls threw their hats into the ring. However, despite the fact that he was polling in the mid-40s, roughly 30 points ahead of his nearest opponent, Ossoff and Democrats knew he needed to get more support in order to gain at least 50% and avoid a runoff.
In the end, Ossoff ended up pulling in less than 50%, with totals showing him at 48.6% after a huge dump of votes came in from Fulton County around midnight, leading to numerous outlets to project this as heading to a runoff.

I’m going to lean towards the grapefruit being smarter and far less radical.
<¡>Who cares how many ways the Republican vote was split. All that was needed was to prevent the Democrat from getting a majority of the vote. Since no candidate got a majority, it goes to a runoff. In Texas, the second place finisher in the first round is more likely to win the runoff election.
Where are all the Cruzers now that said Trump shouldn’t have tweeted?
Voters should have the right to nominate a candidate rather than having one imposed like the rats obviously did with Ossoff, (a few other rats ran including a former State Senator but got VERY few votes). There were 4 viable Republicans BTW, the others were nothings.
It’s only a problem because of Georgia’s ridiculous jungle primary for special elections.
I can understand why GA doesn’t want to have a special primary, then primary runoff (as they have in GA) and then general. That could be solved by having an instant runoff party primary. Or less democratically it could be solved by having the party appoint a candidate (as many other states do for special elections) and not having a primary at all. Or having the party select a maximum of 2 candidates to run in the primary, eliminated the need for a runoff.
Jungle primaries are stupid and subversive to democracy. Funny thing is if the rats had run 2 candidates and they spit the rat vote evenly, they would have both advanced to the runoff. So they have actually hurt themselves by putting out a fatwah that Ossoff was to be the sole contender.
And really I’m not sure how much it mattered that there were 4 GOP candidates, the a-hole commie rat would have come close to winning anyway. He did well cause rat turnout was energized, for reasons that had nothing to do with the number of Republican candidates. He was polling low 40’s, ended up with high 40’s.
The title of this thread aside, there is no spinning this. This was a near disaster. Emphasis on near.
There’s no reason to think the runoff won’t be close.
The good news is that rat expectations are high, so WHEN they lose the runoff, even if it’s by 1 point, it will be hard for them to spin it. We’ll be able to say close only counts in horseshoes.
This is all hands on deck for the party. We need to do everything. Suppress rat turnout, post signs in rat precincts the day before the runoff that voting will be extended to Wednesday (just kidding, half kidding). Bring out big guns to campaign for Karen Handel. And make sure everyone knows that Ossoff is a Berner (I don’t know if he is a Berner but we should say he is regardless, this is not a Bernie district) communist backed by every piece of psycho garbage in hollywood.
And Georgia needs to consider some things. They likely won’t cause most pubbie politicians lack the will to win but they should
1)Scrap the jungle primary like I said
2)Scrap early voting, you’d think it would help working people vote but it seems to mostly help lazy democrats and it must make fraud easier. Fulton County was slow as hell counting the votes. They were in November too as you’ll recall with GA a very late call (after Florida!) despite a comfortable enough margin for Trump.
3)Consider a mid-decade re-draw of the district lines. This area were’e talking about is undergoing the same rot that happened in Northern VA. Trump did underporm there but some of it is not on him, it has shifted more to left and I’m not sure it won’t shift a little more in the coming years. Nip it in the bud.
Hear, hear!
Because they’re Republicans.
That actually helped. With only one GOP candidate, for example, some GOP voters might not have voted for GOP.
The more GOP voters, even spread among 100 candidates, the more the Demorat has to get in order to get to 50%.
I agree. GOP voters had enough candidates to choose from. Running 11 candidates could have brought out more voters.
Has there been a tally of Dem, GOP votes? I’m guessing more GOP votes.
In other words, the Rat vote fraud machine took a dump.
The Washington Post article is titled “Why Trump may Sink Republicans”
:) I hope he keeps “sinking” them like he did last time.
We’ll have a 70 percent majority.
Fresh Wind: "In other words, the Rat vote fraud machine took a dump."
I can understand the frustration of FReeper Fresh Wind. But the only way I can interpret the above statement is that Ossoff was denied a majority due to a late dump of votes from Fulton County.
So is Fulton County the good guy? Is North Fulton County a good guy?
“Now a star is born.”
LOL, gimmee a break!! Since when is a loser a “star”? In a few days no one remembers he lost by 1.5 points but they will remember he lost. Lets also remember Clinton only lost this District by 1% to Trump.
I can make the argument the Republicans did BETTER in this District last night than they did in November.
Niether does the Democrat.
Yup, it’s beginning to look that way.
Take away our movies? Our precious sporting events? Our 'bread and circuses'?
Blasphemer!
“Trump tells it the way it is!”
I used to love saying that to NeverTrumpers during the primary and general elections knowing that it sent them closer and closer to a nervous breakdown. Best election ever.
Here’s a tally of the votes.
Total votes: 192,084
Dem: 93,911
GOP: 98,173
GOP vote lead by 4,262
They’re all rocking back and forth, wringing their hands and mumbling incoherently to themselves hoping to see Trump screw up.
I had read it was $8.3 million of money raised outside Georgia funneled into his campaign by Hollywood and various other liberal interests desperate to flip the seat.
Ossoff is a 30-year old documentary filmmaker. Doubt he had $8 million to spend.
