The issue we historically held with Mick ‘Cantalopes’ Mulvaney, was his direct association with Speaker Ryan when it comes to tax/budget plans. Thankfully, so far, Mulvaney has outperformed expectations and our fears have not been seen in Trump policy. We are cautiously optimistic.

House Speaker Paul Ryan is all-in with his “Border Adjustment Tax”, it is part of his larger ‘Better Way’ tax agenda. Apparently, according to The Hill, Mulvaney is not in alignment with Ryan. Good. The bottom line is Ryan’s plan is Tom Donohue’s plan. Ryan’s “Better Way” is the construct of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The question is why the champions of cheap labor would support a Border Adjustment Tax ? The whole purpose of a BAT would be to make imports more expensive and American goods less expensive. Basically to increase American manufacturing. How does that fit in with cheap labor in America? I don’t see the connection.

The Chamber has long been a champion of “Comprehensive Immigration Reform”, aka amnesty.
Amnesty is not just for illegal aliens, it is also amnesty for the employers who have been employing illegal aliens. Some industries are completely reliant on illegal alien labor, construction, hospitality, food processing, carpet mills, etc.
They like their compliant work force and wish to keep it.

Yes, that is the definition of ‘cheap labor express’. But how does that make them supporters of border adjustment taxes ? Is a BAT going to make anyone more likely to support amnesty ?

I don’t see immigration and corporate tax reform a likely link, unless they think a BAT will cause such a huge demand for workers that immigration will have to be relaxed to fill manufacturing jobs.

The only tax reform within the income tax that will not ultimately make the nation worse off than it is now is going to a flat income tax with no deductions, no exemptions, no tax credits or any other modifications and do it as a Constitutional Amendment.
9% from the first dollar of income should be about the right level to provide the income to operate the government and with such a tax, especially if combined with the elimination of almost all business regulation, would generate rapidly increasing amounts of revenue for the Federal government. That is its only liability.
