Getting ready: Pentagon to protect electric grid from massive attack

Amid warnings that North Korea and Iran have plans to take out parts of the U.S. electric grid through a cyber attack or atmospheric nuclear blast, the Pentagon is taking steps to both protect the nation's communications and power lifeline.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has charged BAE Systems to map a system that can detect a cyber attack and gin up an alternative communications network for military and civilian use if the grid is fried, according to Defense Systems, the online newsletter.

Former CIA Director James Woolsey has been warning for years that the grid is extremely vulnerable, and recently the Pentagon and some states have taken the warning seriously. Woolsey and former EMP Commission chief of staff Peter Vincent Pry have pointed a finger at North Korea, which is now threatening the U.S.

Only 25 years too late.

In a statement, DARPA said it is "interested, specifically, in early warning of impending attack..."

I guess "we are going to nuke you" doesn't count as an early warning.

I guess I could do that. I’ll tell you what, I’m gonna blame anybody that had the power to do it and did nothing.

Might as well blame Reagan.

Trump isn’t going to sit around and have American children have to deal with NK. He will do it.

NK is hell bent on destruction. They could care less about their nation and the philosophy of guidance is a mystery.

If you want to be left alone, so be it. They are a failed nation and must branch out. China will not help them.

Since he knows the world is speculating it would be today, maybe not, OTOH, since he knows people may think what I just stated, maybe so. In any event, I’ll bet on our guys.

Freighters in port are the obvious choice. Can we holding all ship traffic 30 mile out and perform radiological inspections? Could low flying aircraft or helicopters with remote sensing do the job? At least we should concentrate on any ship that put into NK or a related state in the past two months.

Thank God a serious adult is in charge now instead of the moslem quisling obama.

Yep.

Because even if the world was perfectly at peace the sun still likes to throw stuff at us.

William F. Buckley wrote about our electric grid vulnerability way back in the 60s.

Today we have infinitely more dependence on power.

BTW, Verizon has been out all afternoon here in NW Florida.

I am no electrician but my brothers-in-law are. When I asked this question to them, they said that the best protection for the least cost would be to put in an AC-DC-AC “thing” at each high voltage line that crosses a state line.

They said that it would not stop the damage but would go a long way to isolate the damaged caused.

Just passing on - not knowledgeable enough to comment

good timeline of NORK nuclear program here.

1989 - Through satellite photos, the U.S. learns of new construction at a nuclear complex near the North Korean town of Yongbyon. U.S. intelligence analysts suspect that North Korea, which had signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in 1985 but had not yet allowed inspections of its nuclear facilities, is in the early stages of building a nuclear bomb.

Is tomorrow the day?

April 15 is the day... and it's now 6:46 AM April 15 in North Korea.

Wow.

It’s about darned time.

Excellent.

We finally have some adults in charge.

Newt Gingrich is another who has taken this threat seriously and has been pushing for hardening the grid.

Not that expensive if done now, a few billion at most.

Potential saving in lives: 90% of U.S. citizens. In dollars, hundreds of trillions.

Military is hardened, we are (mostly) not.
Maybe a Black Swan event is upon us?

Poor snowflakes - they were so much fun, now they're all starving, poor things.

Then when NK got them and Iran continued to work towards them he did nothing

Because the Establishment Media was demonizing him every hour of every day. He did not believe he had enough support to do it.

The Establishment Media has been the primary power in this Country for 50 years.

This is going to take years, I doubt it’s got anything to do with the immediate situation. Rather, it’s just that we’ve finally got an adult in charge who gives a damn.

Exactly right on both points.

It won’t be ready until sometime in 2020. That’s a long, dangerous time.

“Might as well blame Reagan.”

9/11 was supposed to have changed everything. Bush made an explicit promise not to allow them to have nukes and caved. No other president made that statement, and Bush was in charge when they got them. Unfortunately he listened to too many deep state liberals, IMHO.

Just so everybody understands. We don’t have an electrical grid. We have lots of little grids that sometimes connect to other grids for power sharing.

You cannot protect the grid. Our grid is unbelievably open to a ICBM attack. Russia could take out our grids quite easily. Everywhere we have a Damn or any other power source, a well aimed ICBM could easily turn it off. Then there are the miles of unprotected wire that transports electricity to and between cities. All very much wide open and always will be.

The question is whether or not North Korea could get a rocket across the pacific. NO. Could they hit anything if they could get it here. NO. Could they explode a bomb on the target. NO.

Could they cause real harm to South Korea, Yes. Could they do damage to Japan, Yes but not as much.

Should China help us take out North Korea, yes. Why would they help us. Because our Navy would go away. We have promised to protect both Japan and South Korea. If North Korea is no longer a threat, the US would scale down and spend our defense money elsewhere. China would love that.

But lets be clear. North Korea is no threat to our electricity grid today. And China and Russia could easily take out our electricity. Russia especially. And there is no ability to make it safe from attack of either of those two countries.

“Because the Establishment Media was demonizing him every hour of every day. He did not believe he had enough support to do it.”

Yep, largely because he accepted Colin Powell’s “pottery barn rule”, and burned up all his support and credibility trying to create “democracy” in Iraq. That and his unwillingness to ever hit back at the left.
