New Yorkers shocked to find that people are fleeing their city in droves

New York, New York. So nice they say it twice. But it’s apparently not nice enough anymore for people to want to stick around. The NY Post highlights some recent population figures which indicate that a growing number of Gotham residents (that would be rapidly growing) either don’t want to live there anymore or simply can’t afford to. In either case, there’s a bit of an exodus going on and the Big Apple is losing residents faster than any other major metropolitan area in the country.

More people are leaving the New York region than any other major metropolitan area in the country.

More than 1 million people moved out of the New York area to other parts of the country since 2010, a rate of 4.4 percent — the highest negative net migration rate among the nation’s large population centers, US Census records show.

The number of people leaving the region — which includes parts of New Jersey, Connecticut, the lower Hudson Valley and Long Island — in one year swelled from 187,034 in 2015 to 223,423 in 2016, while the number of international immigrants settling in the tristate area dwindled from 181,551 to 160,324 over the same period, records show.

More than a million people in six years is not normal ebb and flow. To be fair, we should emphasize the fact that this isn’t just New York City… it includes the outlying areas of New Jersey and the inner reach of Long Island. It also doesn’t include the rest of New York State. (You know… the unfashionable, more rural upstate region where I live.)

Part of it is certainly the cost of living and that’s what the Post article focuses on primarily. When the economy improves, rent and mortgage costs skyrocket faster in that town than almost anywhere else and it’s already one of the most expensive places in the country to live. According to Fortune Magazine last December, the average price of an apartment in the Big Apple is now over two million dollars. Yes, you read that correctly… that’s for an apartment. By contrast, a bit more than five hours away to the northwest, a three bedroom colonial with a fenced in yard a couple of blocks down the hill from me sold for $85K this winter. If you could plunk that property down in the middle of Manhattan it would probably cost at least $25M.

But that’s not the only factor. Another cost of continuing to elect Democrats for generations is that New York State is one of the most heavily taxed states in the nation and the city is even worse. Progressive policies have led to some of the most invasive regulations and childish rules imaginable. (Though that’s something the true, diehard liberal progressives shouldn’t be complaining about.) All in all, if you want to live in New York City you’d better like a lot of government in your life and be prepared to fund it out of your paycheck every week at a steep clip.

In any event, you can add all of those factors up and it’s no wonder that people are fleeing. At this point we can only hope that the trend continues until the upstate population outnumbers them and we can get the state government back under control. Well… we can dream, anyway.

Connecticut is a pretty state. Lots of big homes and streets. If Trump can propose good infrastructure and transportation projects, he could do well in the Northeast in 2020.

Live in NYC? I’d rather have a rabid wolverine up my kilt.

I travel there occasionally. Staten Island is a good place to visit. Queens is a good place to visit.

I too travel to NY, on my way to Maine. And I make it a point NEVER to stop there for any reason.

There may be issues at those places in NYC, but I don’t know that they are related to traffic from NJ. Friends that ride the rails in from here describe lower ridership than 10 years ago.

NY didn’t want to share revenue for a second bridge (as they do with the GWB), so they built the Tappan Zee Bridge at a point where both sides are in NY - and the river is VERY wide (which brings a whole slew of problems with it). Now they want help repairing/replacing it...

At this point few Americans (gay or straight) have children; I’m shocked to see how TV advertising has morphed to tap in to this demographic. My town built its first “bark park” a couple of years ago for the dwindling number of childless Americans, and there was some goofy Halloween event where people put costumes on their pets - we are witnessing the death of a culture and a whole genetic pool. Less than a mile south, the imported “replacement Americans” have a nice new soccer field - and they are our future.

A news story a couple of years ago summed up NYC’s problems perfectly; a group of darker-skinned mothers (no fathers visible) held signs at a playground asking white people to use their playground. Their logic was that the city would maintain it better if white children played there; the truth was they wanted somebody else to maintain the infrastructure initially built by whites years ago, and there were no white people left in that particular barrio.

BTW, parts of Rockland and Orange counties are beautiful; it is a shame NY is suffering as it is. I’m watching the same thing unfold in NJ; the storylines are very similar.

Actually the Tappan Zee was built where it was because engineering-wise, it was an ideal spot. Though the Hudson is about its widest point in that area, the waters are comparatively shallower making the bridge easier to build. The new Tappan Zee is already well under construction and the progress being made is incredible. I’m thinking they are afraid the old one might fail at any minute.

If you see footage of the Tacoma Narrows bridge swaying before it fell, and bear in mind the wind advisories they have for the Tappan Zee bridge, then its placement is foolish. If NY was willing to share revenues, the bridge should have been built further south (where the river is more narrow).

Was that the bridge that the people out in WA called Bouncing Betty? I had uncles out there, stayed on after having been stationed there and I remember them talking about it.

I’ve seen footage of it (when people were driving on it, and when it fell); absolutely incredible. The whole roadbed ripples like waves, and lampposts sway with them. I believe the last car on there fell with a dog in it (the driver ran off)...

Call me crazy if you want and you might be right, but I’d have come off that bridge with my dog or gone down together with it. I can’t imagine leaving a dependent animal in my care behind to die like that.

It was 77 years ago; people viewed animals in a more practical sense back then. I’d be damned if I died trying to save what amounts to “emergency rations”... :P

"Call me crazy if you want and you might be right..."

Okay, you're "Crazy if you want".

Are you going to change your screen name as well, or just the pronoun that you want used?

I’m sure CHris Cuomo will report on brother andy Cuomo’s policies of excruciating taxes and regulations PLUS all the extremist Left Wing policies that have instilled horror on so many New Yorkers.

Frankly, I love NY, I hate the Left Wing Government and the horrible policies and yes, I’ll be moving out at retirement.

Too many escapees from Liberal Hellholes try to recreate the hell they just left once they get settled in their new states.

“That’s not the way we do it in New Yawk!”

“Why don’t you have mass transit?”

Whadda’ ya’ mean I don’t get as much free stuff?”

“You mean you don’t have a symphony orchestra or a Performing Arts center?”
