The new series of Doctor Who will see the Time Lord joined by his first openly gay companion. Bill Potts's sexuality will be revealed pretty much straightaway in her second line of dialogue when the show returns to BBC One on 15 April. "It shouldn't be a big deal in the 21st Century. It's about time isn't it?" Pearl Mackie, who plays Bill, told the BBC. "That representation is important, especially on a mainstream show." She added: "It's important to say people are gay, people are black - there are also aliens in the world as well so watch out for them. "I remember watching TV as a young mixed race girl not seeing many people who looked like me, so I think being able to visually recognise yourself on screen is important." "[Being gay] is not the main thing that defines her character - it's something that's part of her and something that she's very happy and very comfortable with."
Gay and bisexual characters have featured in Doctor Who before, such as Captain Jack and River Song, but this is the first time the Doctor's permanent companion has been openly gay. Although Captain Jack - played by John Barrowman - travelled with the Doctor for a number of episodes, he was not a full-time companion in the traditional sense. Mackie said it had been "kind of insane" to be the centre of attention since she was announced in the role last April, despite not being seen on screen until this Easter. "My Twitter follower count went from 400-and-something to 16,500 in about two hours, so that was pretty mental," said the actress, who is taking over from Jenna Coleman as the Doctor's companion. "But it's been really nice, everyone seems to be really excited."

“Cutting edge civil rights TV, like when gays were sold as slaves in colonial America.”
There could be some really funny comedy in that plot line.
Tom Baker was the best overall. I liked the third one a lot too. He was the first one I saw and his had the UNIT crowd with Lethbridge Stewart and Benton. I never cared for Yates.
Capaldi reminds me a lot of the 3rd one and I like Peter.
Peter Davison did OK. Colin Baker would have but had lousy scripts. I like Sylvester McCoy also.
Speaking of Peter. Try the series “The Last Detective”. He’s Dangerous Davies. Dangerous because he isn’t and the last detective anyone would want but somehow solves the big case despite the jerk boss and co-irkers.
Loved the actor in “Local Hero”. One of my fave movies and used to stay at the Scottish villiage where it was filmed.
His role as Doc.....not so much.

2357 Homosexuality refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained. Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be approved. |
Watching this stuff seems like self-inflicted pain to me. Just shut the damned propaganda off! Homosexuality is rampant among creative types in Hollywood and elsewhere. They've now found a way to "normatize" their sexual proclivities. But TV lives by ratings and movies by box office. They die if no one watches.
What happens in the Tardis.... is going to be fabulous!
“OH Dawkta! Yaw Tardis is bigga on the INSYDE than it is on the OUTSYDE!”
“That’s what they awl say, my deah.”
Torchwood became “damaged goods” when they decided to use it to overtly push homosexual themes, with gratuitous male-male sex scenes and flirting that had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the actual storyline, and was instead just a way for the creator to flaunt his own gayness without any legitimate purpose.
It’s objectionable in the same way that, for example, people would tune out Tom Cruise if every Tom Cruise movie were overtly trying to convert viewers to Scientology.
But that’s all beside the point, because as everybody knows, not a single other companion, past, present, or future, can hold a candle to Rose.
(as he ducks for cover)
I know the wizards of the DSM removed homosexuality from their mental illness manual but I am wondering when the biology wizards added the anus to their sex organ list.

Is that Bill de Blasio’s son ?
Jon Pertwee’s, the third Doctor, life was the real life model for James Bond. Unfortunately, many of the third Doctor episodes are no longer available anywhere.
Or just start rooting for the Daleks.
I always thought it sucked, didn't watch.
Now it will really *suck*...no need to watch now either.
So is this expected to increase viewership.
Even people that really don’t give a care about the sexuality of a character don’t want to watch someone unattractive for an hour.
I’ll not bother figuring out what channel and time this drivel is delivered.
I’ve never watched Dr. Who, and don’t plan to start. For a country that is overrun with muzzies, they seem to have as many homo programs as the U.S. In fact the Brits started this homo TV crap first.
