"I don't know the title, but that's Prokofiev. Nobody else writes like that."
Yep. When I saw the Movie "Ivan The Terrible" in a little artsy-fartsy movie house, I KNEW it was Prokofiev.
As far as Stravinsky not having to put up with Stalin, I stand corrected.
It may have been a factor in his fearless exploration of rhythms and dissonance, because he didn't have to get it past "The Big Chief Commissar"

I never heard that particular Allen Sherman parody until now. It's brilliant.
When Sherman came in to conduct an "Evening at Pops" one day, Arthur Fiedler told him that he would leave a note on the podium that would tell him everything he needed to know about conducting. When Sherman got there, he found a little piece of paper that said, "Don't make an ass out of yourself."

I remember the day my Dad bought the record and we put it on the turntable (connected to the Altec-Lansing Voice of the Theater Speakers) and Dad and I sat down together and laughed our keesters off!
I have such WONDERFUL Memories of my Dad.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK
GEORGE GERSHWIN
TIP-TOES
GEORGE GERSHWIN: LOOKING FOR A BOYFirst you start with George. This is not a piano roll but an actual recording of Gershwin at the piano recorded in London in 1926. Note that George is still thinking in ragtime mode even though that kind of music had been gone for almost a decade. The left hand is in the standard ragtime oom-pah in 2/4, and much of the theme in the right hand is concentrated on the 4th and 5th fingers.

SARAH VAUGHAN: LOOKING FOR A BOYSassys 1957 recording takes it more slowly and in an orchestral vein. This is a classic recording.

Hi Publius...I’m back and will catch up. I was watching the MET do “Il Travatore” but I totally lost patience with the HORRIBLE, Dreary, Colorless, dark, brutalist, post-modern, mid-century, ugly sets and lighting.
The Met has been pushing this stuff for the last couple of years and I am getting sick of it!
I might as well have an old B&W TV set.

I saw "Trovatore" in Seattle in 1997. The sets were bright orange, and the scenery was nothing but chairs on the walls, ceilings, floors, all at different angles. None of it made any sense.
So much for post-modernist BS.

The Marx Brothers did to that opera precisely what it deserved.

Verdi wouldn't take that sitting down!
