3-Year-Old Sits Down to Have Dinner With Police Officer Who Was Eating Alone
Inside Edition ^ | 3/29/2017 | Maya Chung

It was an adorable moment caught on video as a 3-year-old girl in Massachusetts sat down to dine with a police officer who was eating alone.

In the video shared by the Hingham Police Department, the girl, named Lillian, engages the officer at a local Panera.

The officer, Sgt. Steven Dearth, described Lillian as a "very outgoing" girl who approached his table to talk to him while out eating with her parents and a younger sibling.

"I was working an evening shift and I stopped to have dinner at Panera bread. I was waiting for my food to get ready and I saw this little girl and she looked at me and smiled and I smiled," Sgt. Dearth told InsideEdition.com. "Her dad carried her over and then I gave her a high five and a 'Jr. Police Officer' sticker."

Dearth said he then went to sit down and eat his meal when Lillian sauntered over to his table with her parents watching. He motioned for her to sit down.

"We talked. She asked if I had a police car and toward the end of the dinner she said, 'We should have a playdate in a few days.'" Dearth said. "The whole time she never turned around to look at her parents. It was amazing to see a child that was that comfortable around a uniform police officer."

The pair snapped a photo together before parting ways.

Dearth says Lillian’s mom, Nicole, plans to bring her to the police station to show her around later in the week.

It’s not exactly a playdate — but it will do.

I am totally about holding police to a high standard.
And rewarding those who meet that high standard.
Hope all those involved get home safely, for a while to come.
Comfortable cops make better decisions then fearful cops.

I remember all too well how we were treated returning home from Vietnam

First, thank you for your service.

Second, one of my dad’s good friends served in Vietnam and he got his leg shot up. As he came home, walking through O’Hare, walking with crutches, a bunch of hippies spit on him.

I can only imagine what must have happened to you. I’m so sorry to hear that.

He seems like a nice guy.

But nowadays while police may not be your enemies, but they also are not your friends.

It was a very divisive time.

Again I’m sorry for what you had to endure back home, after what you had to live through over there.

All the best, FRiend.

Julie. :)

*** How great to see a cop who looks so great in his uniform and isn’t dressed as though he were entering Fallujah***

The last youngster that I delt with had his sleeves rolled and the shirt was about 3 sizes too small (catch my drift?)

After our 30 minute chat (he was also sporting the NEW Police Glasses with the Camera and Microphone (so I’m kinda dating this recollection) I mentioned to him, knowing I was being recorded that I had spent 28 years in Uniform and no matter where I was on the Planet I could find a Uniform that fit.
3 days later he showed back up in a Uniform that fit, 2 weeks after that he was no longer with the PD, folks I talked to said he was a new probation hire and it didn’t work out for him. I hope I steered him in the right direction for the next local he wants to Police.

When I went to Mass this Sunday I was surprised to see a police officer (in uniform) in the front pew with his wife and young children. I thought it was great he was there in uniform. I didn’t get a chance afterward to thank him for what he does.

Have a nice rest of the evening/night. :)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Around noon today (Wednesday), a W-M cashier told me to “have a nice week end”.
I was tempted to tell her to have a merry Christmas” but I didn’t.
In ‘73 / ‘74 we were treated w contempt in San Diego, the local Sheriff would come in and give us newbies instruction on how to deal with the locals (which included the San Diego PD)
Those days if we left base E-5 and below were in Dress Uniform to leave the Ship, we would have Lockers at the Y to change into Civilian clothes and we were still easy to spot in public. Unlike and contradictory to what most people think, we spent most of our time at the Zoo, the Museum or Gasp ... at Church, where we were welcome and considered normal teenagers.
That was my experience anyway.
My best days off were just picking a Bus Route and ride the Bus the full Circle, get off where I got on and then do another Route same thing, got to see all of San Diego and OB
It was $.35 so I could afford it ;^)
I do hope he was armed as usual/normal, and not politically correct.
I appreciate those that do and will stand at the door w the Pastor to shake his hand
Do you want officers to take on the MS-13 gang in slacks and sport shirts? It ain’t Norman Rockwell any more my friend.
picking a Bus Route and ride the Bus the full Circle,
How funny. I was a few years younger but did the same things in Dallas. Get on a bus and stay the full circle. Learned a whole lot about Dallas and some of the neighborhoods that way.
There is a time and a place for everything and you do not need full battle rattle every second of your day.
“She’ll certainly be breaking some hearts in a few years.”
Looks a lot like my granddaughter who is already proficient with a rifle and will be taking care of her own pony soon. Mom is an incredibly capable woman who can do almost anything and is currently showing Arabians for a breeder. Plus she looks like Sandra Santiago from Miami Vice. I’m a step dad so I can’t claim any genetic credit but I hope I had some positive influence.
