In ‘73 / ‘74 we were treated w contempt in San Diego, the local Sheriff would come in and give us newbies instruction on how to deal with the locals (which included the San Diego PD)
Those days if we left base E-5 and below were in Dress Uniform to leave the Ship, we would have Lockers at the Y to change into Civilian clothes and we were still easy to spot in public. Unlike and contradictory to what most people think, we spent most of our time at the Zoo, the Museum or Gasp ... at Church, where we were welcome and considered normal teenagers.
That was my experience anyway.
My best days off were just picking a Bus Route and ride the Bus the full Circle, get off where I got on and then do another Route same thing, got to see all of San Diego and OB
It was $.35 so I could afford it ;^)

picking a Bus Route and ride the Bus the full Circle,

How funny. I was a few years younger but did the same things in Dallas. Get on a bus and stay the full circle. Learned a whole lot about Dallas and some of the neighborhoods that way.
