One year after Canada embraced Syrian refugees like no other country, a reckoning was underway.
Ordinary Canadians had essentially adopted thousands of Syrian families, donating a year of their time and money to guide them into new lives just as many other countries shunned them. Some citizens already considered the project a humanitarian triumph; others believed the Syrians would end up isolated and adrift, stuck on welfare or worse. As 2016 turned to 2017 and the yearlong commitments began to expire, the question of how the newcomers would fare acquired a national nickname: Month 13, when the Syrians would try to stand on their own.

If we keep up like this, theyre just going to become more and more dependent, said Ms. Dowler, one of the sponsors who advocated pulling back. Maybe were giving them unreal expectations for the next 10, 20 years of their lives.
It's as difficult as getting U.S. freeloaders off the government nipple once it's been determined that WORK is required and welfare will be history. Wah! Boohoo!
“...a continued d $1,800-a-month government subsidy...”
That’s $21,600 a year, plus the $30,000 from the progidiot sponsor(s?) is $51,600 for the first 12 months. Plus what Hajj earned. OMG, the poor dear muzzies.
I do like the direct sponsor-funded approach — immigrants to be funded directly by sponsors, not gov (well, there is that $1,800 a month pitence). Let’s try THAT here. President Trump?
Oh, Canaduhhhhhhhh.
A feel good refugee story from the NYT. Buried in the story is how poorly the government sponsored refugees are doing.
Trying to drop someone from a backward nation with no education & no skills into a 21st century nation was always foolish. The ones with good education might adapt, the others...not likely. They should’ve been put in a temporary camp until they could be returned home. The sooner Trump gets ‘safe zones’ established with the Saudis & other Arab countries, the better. Then they can go back to what they’re capable of handling.
I feel bad for everyone involved in this.
Maybe were giving them unreal expectations for the next 10, 20 years of their lives.
No, they expected to come to Canada and take over. They will.
Wow.... Wouldn’t it have nice if the Irish got a deal like that....
This is why I wonder how good an idea it is to bring refugees to the West. Providing decent arrangements closer to where they live, along with education and health care, is more cost-effective and in the long run, might do more to help those nations find stability.
The useful idiots just assume that illiterate rural Syrian refugees can seamlessly become productive middle class urban Canadians in only 12 months. You cannot transfer people from the stone age to 21st century western civilization in 12 months or even 12 years. It simply isn’t possible.
The ACLU declared welfare an entitlement. Or at least that’s the way it seems.
Chicory, there is no need to wonder. Your common sense has given you the answer.
It’s as difficult as getting U.S. freeloaders off the government nipple once it’s been determined that WORK is required and welfare will be history.
...
Crooked politicians want them on the nipple so they’ll keep voting for crooked politicians. The extra financial burden on the middle class is a bonus.
Inviting people in whome have no desire to be one of you and who are dependent besides. I’m getying VERY tired of the stupid suicidal nature of elements of Western society.
There are many wealthy Syrians and others from middle Eastern countries, shouldn’t they be the main ones sponsoring the refugees?
Or the Lithuanians in the later 1920’s escaping the Russians.
They got off a ship with almost nothing and got to work. Worked hard, learned the language, obeyed the law, went to church, were good and productive Americans. And were very thankful for the opportunity, not whiners, not one bit.
As always, human nature and common sense are ignored.
The hallmark of the left.
These sponsors think the Syrians are just like us. What could go wrong?
Assimilation comes from their young children growing up in their new society. That’s at minimum a generation, 25 years.
For past immigrant/refugees, they wanted to become part of their new land and society, and parents pushed assimilation for the success of their children. I am very doubtful that is true for muzzies.
