"The Hajj sponsors had already decided that their payments to the family would stop. (While the specifics of private sponsorship could vary, they had raised more than 30,000 Canadian dollars, or about $22,500 in American money, to support the family before the Syrians arrived in February 2016.) The family’s income would dip, but between Mr. Hajj’s earnings and a continued $1,800-a-month government subsidy for low-income families — which he called “the children’s salary” — they would be able to remain in their $1,400-a-month, three-bedroom apartment."

“If we keep up like this, they’re just going to become more and more dependent,” said Ms. Dowler, one of the sponsors who advocated pulling back. “Maybe we’re giving them unreal expectations for the next 10, 20 years of their lives.”

Hard to believe that NO ONE in that great country thought of this. How to dump from the nipple once it's been started?

It's as difficult as getting U.S. freeloaders off the government nipple once it's been determined that WORK is required and welfare will be history. Wah! Boohoo!

“...a continued d $1,800-a-month government subsidy...”

That’s $21,600 a year, plus the $30,000 from the progidiot sponsor(s?) is $51,600 for the first 12 months. Plus what Hajj earned. OMG, the poor dear muzzies.

I do like the direct sponsor-funded approach — immigrants to be funded directly by sponsors, not gov (well, there is that $1,800 a month pitence). Let’s try THAT here. President Trump?

Oh, Canaduhhhhhhhh.

A feel good refugee story from the NYT. Buried in the story is how poorly the government sponsored refugees are doing.

Trying to drop someone from a backward nation with no education & no skills into a 21st century nation was always foolish. The ones with good education might adapt, the others...not likely. They should’ve been put in a temporary camp until they could be returned home. The sooner Trump gets ‘safe zones’ established with the Saudis & other Arab countries, the better. Then they can go back to what they’re capable of handling.

No, they expected to come to Canada and take over. They will.

Inviting people in whome have no desire to be one of you and who are dependent besides. I’m getying VERY tired of the stupid suicidal nature of elements of Western society.

There are many wealthy Syrians and others from middle Eastern countries, shouldn’t they be the main ones sponsoring the refugees?

As always, human nature and common sense are ignored.

This must be an updated story that the Times posted at least a month ago. What I remember from the original story was that Dad - given an apartment, a job and lots of social services - was getting that kind of jihadi-anger we all love and admire because his daughter was taking ballet lessons and wearing those skimpy leotards and mom had a good job and was serving lousy meals to the family. I think she was even wearing frocks rather than a full-on burka.

What happens when one of the male refugees separates his female sponsor’s head from her shoulders because she (unknowingly) slighted him/his religion? Or, uses his camel “prod” to welcome her to his world of “submission”?

“But the Hajjes could not read or write, even in Arabic.

After a year of grinding English study, Mr. Hajj, 36, struggled to get the new words out. He longed to scan a supermarket label or road sign with ease and had grown increasingly upset about his second-grade education, understanding how inadequate it would prove in the years to come.”

Just what Canada needed, a bunch of illiterate morons that don’t speak English.

A few weeks later, Mr. Hajj asked the sponsors about going on welfare. He had heard about it from his classmates in English lessons. Some were enrolling, seeing it as a safer bet than insecure, low-wage jobs, they told him. One explained that he could work and still collect the government assistance, if he could persuade his boss to pay him under the table.

With a sinking feeling, the sponsors began to worry: Had Mr. Hajj been withdrawing the money to game the system, to lower his bank balance so he would qualify for social assistance?

Refugees gaming the welfare system? Who saw this coming?

The entire article is worth reading. It’s the NYTimes so you know it doesn’t contain the whole truth and everything works out.

But the lesson learned is that “refugees” are learning how to game the system from other “refugees.” We’re going to need another wall.

I do like Canada’s sponsorship system. It would be a huge wakeup call for the nutty liberals in America.

My great grandfather and his twin brother came to the US when they were18 and not speaking English. They got homesteads, worked hard and ab Muslim countries ove all immediately started to learn English and become Americans. Other than the homesteads they received no government aid. I cherish a 100 year old letter written by my great grandfather to his daughter and marvel at its perfect English, proper grammar, spelling and punctuation....a feat many graduates of our modern public schools could not master.

These immigrants are products of backward Muslim societies kept in the 6th century by sharia law. They have been taught to hate the west and that their goal is to convert the world to Islam by any means even killing. We are fools to think that bringing them to the west and giving them handouts they will integrate into western society or even be greatful
