This artificial island could soon power 6 countries

Danish firm Energinet.dk is already working with the German and Dutch branches of energy firm TenneT to build the island.

So you are using electricity to generate light which becomes heat so you can turn that back into electricity. 2nd Law of Thermodynamics still applies.

"Many consider hydrogen to be the fuel of the future because it produces no carbon emissions when burned, meaning it does not add to global warming."

Hydrogen combustion produces water vapor, which is a more effective greenhouse gas than CO2. But leave the global warming fanatics their illusions.

An ‘artificial sun’ is, by definition, a nuclear fusion reactor. That’s not what this is.

That ain’t no artificial sun. It’s a big energy suck that produces light. No new technology here.

The sun produces its light as a by product of nuclear fusion

Ya see a fusion reactor would make an artificial sun. That would solve the energy issues for good.

The second most effective clean power source would be a well designed (designed for safety) fission reactor.

The goal is to eventually use actual sunlight rather than the artificial light produced at the Juelich experiment, which cost nearly $5 million to build and requires as much electricity in four hours as a four-person household would use in a year.

Yeah, that looks like a winning recipe for generating electricity. Not.

Even if they could use mirrors or prisms to focus sunlight onto a small area, I think it would cause all kinds of problems for the local ecology. Birds would be confused by the shiny surfaces, with what could be lethal results as they either crash into the array or fly into extremely hot air pockets.

I prefer schemes such as the attempt to use algae to collect sunlight. I don't think giant pools of algae would be nearly as bad for the environment as some of the other "green energy" schemes have turned out to be.

This remarkable system extracts tax-payer dollars from the government and stores it in off shore accounts until the moment that it needs to suddenly disappear!

By focusing the entire array on a single 20-by-20 centimetre spot, scientists from the German Aerospace Centre, or DLR, will be able to produce the equivalent of 10,000 times the amount of solar radiation that would normally shine on the same surface.

As ants the world over tremble in fear. NOT a good idea to give Germans what amounts to a giant magnifying glass...

No mention of how much molecular hydrogen they get from each watt of "solar" power and how that compares to other solar methods.

About 130 petawatts of solar energy is constantly hitting the earth. Average consumption is 12 terawatts, or about 0.01% of that. Make solar collection cheap enough and provide a storage method and solar will take over. But this article gives no hint whether this method does that.

I love their paragraph headline:

Industrial capacity could be a decade away

...

I hope they bought a bunch of carbon credits to offset the precious energy used for this boondoggle.

In the meantime, Trump is opening pipelines that will get the job done now.

It is newsworthy when conventional science does it. When someone researching a non-conventional source of energy that has enormous promise does it, it is not newsworthy.
