Spike Lee Calls Out NFL Teams For Not Signing Free Agent Colin Kaepernick
ESPN ^ | March 19 2017 701 central pm | Rich Cimini ESPN Staff Writer

Famed film director Spike Lee has joined the Colin Kaepernick debate, suggesting Sunday in an Instagram post that one of his hometown teams -- the New York Jets -- should sign the unemployed quarterback.

"The New York J-E-T-S Need A Quarterback," wrote Lee, who said he spoke with Kaepernick over brunch. "Who Is The J-E-T-S Quarterback? Is My Man Joe Willie Namath Coming Back? Crazy Times We Live In."

Lee used his post to rail against the NFL for excluding Kaepernick, who ignited a firestorm last fall because he refused to stand for the national anthem as a way to protest social and racial issues.

Lee said it "Smells MAD Fishy To Me, Stinks To The High Heavens" that Kaepernick, who opted out of his San Francisco 49ers contract, still doesn't have a job.

Kaepernick will stand for the national anthem during the 2017 season, sources have told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Kaepernick no longer wants his method of protest to detract from the positive change he believes has been created, sources said. The amount of national discussion on social inequality -- as well as support from other athletes nationwide, including NFL and NBA players -- affirmed the message he has tried to deliver.

Maybe he shouldn't have opted out of his contract with the 49ers in the first place.

Before ESPN complains about NFL teams not hiring Kaepernick, ESPN should rehire Curt Schilling.

Kaepernick would be a marginal hire at best. With all the baggage he brings, no deal. He will alienate far more fans than he will delight. He’s just too much of a risk.

People get second, third and fourth chances all the time - if the talent to wi games is there. there are high and low profile examples every single year.

Bob Kraft and Bill Belichick are famously Trump supporters, but if Krappernook were the second coming of Tom Brady, they'd sign him tomorrow. One thing Belichick does not tolerate it's players who disrupt the business of winning.

Interesting that Kapernik is not compared to Tim Tebow.
In both cases their athletic and QB ability is in the top 40 in the country, but not the top 20.
In both cases, they did things that shifted attention from the game to their personal on field, non-game actions.

That is where the comparison could start. Then the comparison could go wherever the writer wanted. But nobody is making the obvious comparison, why?

What I think will happen is that the few teams that could use a QB are most likely going to wait until after the draft to see what they can get, either via picks or trades during the meat market. In that respect, I can see someone signing him in May or June, once the draft is over and everyone has had a chance to evaluate what they have, what they need, and how much they are willing to spend.

Oh Lord...I'll bet you're right. Dan Snyder'll sign him in June. Sigh.

The fact that Spike Lee feels negatively about this fills me with assurance that I hold the absolutely 100% morally correct view of this issue.

One would have to imagine that any poor Jets fans out there who hear the dimwit Spike Lee imploring the Jets to sign him must be beside themselves.

Anybody with a modicum of football knowledge knows Colin Kapernick is a talentless locker room cancer who is simply trying to pull the race card to get hired.

LOL, Kapernick will hit the dustbin first. There are people out there who don’t realize Spike Lee is the Producer equivalent of “Dead Man Walking”, so they will continue to fund his idiocy, because...that is what liberals do. Eventually, it will run out, but he has a longer shelf life than Kapernick.

Is still an NFL Europe? If so, then maybe some team would like a Chia Pet mascot. Perfect for him.

Not a bad analysis, but the key thing is, there are a host of available quarterbacks with more talent, more leadership, and less team poison than Kapernick.

Only a blind, desperate, ignorant, fool of a GM or coach would hire him.

Which I think is great. Give some of the other non-cancers a shot to be a backup. Much better for any team.

Up until this whole thing started with Kapernick, I had no idea he was black. I thought he was hispanic.

If you suck at your stated profession you don’t get hired.

Well, as a fan who had a chance to watch him play for a period of time at the professional level, that isn’t true...he didn’t get blacklisted.

As a quarterback, he simply couldn’t read defenses correctly or fast enough, and when he did read the defense correctly, his throwing mechanics couldn’t deliver the ball consistently to the target.

As an NFL quarterback, you can be bad at reading defenses or delivering the ball, and still get a job as a backup somewhere, but...if you are bad at both of them at the same time, you won’t be able to play at the top level.

FWIW, I liked watching him play for the three months he was on the team I followed, but it was pretty clear (as I watched him closely and was rooting for him) his future in the NFL wasn’t at quarterback. I felt he did miss a chance to move to another position, because I think he could have developed talent as a receiver, but he wasn’t willing to try it. (I think quarterbacks who move to receiver have an innate advantage in certain types of offenses if they have the requisite athletic ability)
